problem #126

Silverado 1500

  • 52,000 miles
My truck would brake normally except when I stopped, then at low speed the truck would fail to stop. I almost got into multiple accidents (hitting walls, poles, a bus) and was even worse going downhill. It took both feet and all my weight to get the truck to stop. My dealer said the vacuum pump was at 11psi when it should have been 27. Eventually someone is going to get into a bad accident because of this issue.

Vacuum pump. My vacuum pump went out as I was driving home on the highway. Every few presses of the brake pedal it would go all the way to the floor and it took much longer to stop. It was scary and I am very thankful I didn't get in a wreck. I got it fixed at my Chevrolet dealer. The cost for repair was $600. Worst part is my vehicle, a 2015, ony had 27,000 miles on it. Still feels new and the brakes failed.

On several occasions while backing down a sloped driveway while depressing the brake, the pedal has become hard to push and braking was almost impossible. This same problem has occurred while backing a trailer, it takes a greater applied force to depress the brake.

I had a brake defective vacuum pump on my on 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. I had the vacuum pump changed on 1/30/2019. My brakes were losing pressure when I was driving slowly. My brakes would lose pressure primarily while I was backing up. I have narrowly missed having several accidents (with other vehicles and property) due to the problem. On one instance, I lost brake pressure going down a hill. Braking distance was increased, and so were my efforts to halt my truck. I also noticed my brakes losing pressure after my truck giving me several alerts (while driving and parked) about servicing the trailer brake system. I am not sure if that has any bearing on the vacuum pump. I will also be replacing the trailer brake switch on my truck. I hope this fixes everything and I will not have that problem again. I did some research on the internet and it sounds like this is a common problem. This has been a particular problem with my truck since about August or so.

As my wife came to a complete stop at a stoplight and as the light turned green, she pressed the gas pedal and the truck would not accerlate. She pressed the gas pedal down to the floor board and still would not accerlate. So due to this the truck slowly rolled foward. She slammed on the brakes and the brakes would not move. Like if they became locked and wouldn't move an inch. At this point she is trying to get off the road to the shoulder, to avoid oncoming traffic. Then she finds that the steering wheel is also locked and can not be turned. It's taking her maximum effort to stop the truck from rolling forward and to veer off the road to avoid other vehicles. She is finally able to stop the vehicle after about 100 yards of effort and waits about 10 minutes, before the brakes and steering wheel would free up. No error message was present the entire time these functions were disabled and after they freed up, it was like if nothing ever happened. No check engine light has ever been on this vehicle. Strong belief this is a manufacturing defect and should have a recall.

Brake pedal becomes hard to press when frequently stopping, such as backing up a trailer or in stop & go traffic. This has nearly caused me to have an accident more than once. It is becoming progressively worse and more frequent there are no fault indicators or codes displayed. It will start working again and then start randomly in traffic.

When traveling in stop and go traffic, the brake pedal gets very hard and you can not stop the vehicle. This happened to me 3 times too many, I had the vehicle towed to the dealership, $709 later, they supposedly replaced the vacuum pump. Dealer stated they have had other vehicles brought in for the same reason. This is a serious problem.

On two occasions in the past week my brake pedal has become extremely stiff at low speeds and caused the brakes to fail. The first incident occurred as I approached a stop sign on a busy city street. My brake pedal became stiff and the brakes would not stop the vehicle. Causing me to roll into the path of another vehicle. I managed to stop and the other vehicle avoided me. The second incident occurred this morning as I backed into my drive way. As I attempted to stop my pedal became stiff and the brakes would not function properly. Despite stand on the brake pedal I was unable to stop my vehicle before it struck my utility trailer. Thankfully no damaged occurred. I contacted the parts department at mission Chevrolet in el paso, Texas and was advised the part is in heavy demand and will be unavailable for 7 to 10 business days.

While backing up vehicle, at a slow speed, gravel driveway, backing down hill, brake pedal became hard and required a considerable amount more braking effort with much less effect. After vehicle was stopped and moved forward, this was still present. Vehicle was again stopped and then power cycled. This returned the vehicle to normal.

Brake pedal gets hard, and brakes are not working, it seems to happen more frequently. Usually at low speed, and it has made it interesting at parking lots, or stop & go traffic, and parking in our driveway. We have checked everything, and couldn't find anything wrong. Googled the symptoms, amd it appears this is happening to more Chevrolet Silverado than mine, and the tech's say it's a brake booster pump issue. I think Chevrolet need to fix this issue, since it's happening to several trucks, it's not just a flawed pump, but more likely a pump weekness overall. Happened first time a year ago, when in a ferry lane, and the speed was walking speed, and we barely managed to stop before we hit the car in front of us.

The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While driving 15 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and failed to operate. As a result, the vehicle crashed into a tractor trailer. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was not filed and there were no injuries. The contact was able to park the vehicle. The contact called gengras Chevrolet at (860) 748-4355 (585 Connecticut blvd, East hartford, ct 06108) and was informed that they were unaware of any brake failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 68,000.

At low speeds while in motion either in traffic, driveways or parking lots the power brakes would stop working causing the truck to not brake properly. The brake pedal became very stiff and would not stop. While this did not cause any accidents, it was a near miss on several occasions. I took it to the Chevrolet dealer where they said the brake "vacuum pump has failed". they stated it was not covered under warranty and would cost $700.89. The pump was replaced on 11/28/2018, with no occurances of this issue since. The truck had 59,108 miles on it at the time of vacuum pump replacement. The first brake issue was around 50,000 miles and happened about 8-10 times between June and November 2018.

Driving down single lane road I began to stop for red light, as I began to depress brake pedal but it was stiff and had significant effect slowing my truck. I drove of right side of road into wet grass too avoid collision of SUV stoped in front of me. There was no loss of control or damage done to exterior of truck or myself. As I'm almost completely stoped the side curtain air bags deploy for no apparent reason causing sever damage it the interior panels, headliner and both front seat belts that have that contain small charge permintly lock and now are un usable.I was only person in truck but the passenger front seat belt is retracted and locked guitar string tight.

I was parking my truck in a parking lot space, and when the truck was moving slow, I applied the brakes, and had to push very hard on the brake pedal to get the truck to stop. I had a local dealership run a diagnostic on the truck, and it came up as a faulty brake vacuum pump.

The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While driving approximately 50 mph, the brake pedal became really stiff and did not function. Also, the brake assist failure indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was driven to the contact's residence and later taken to classic Chevrolet of sugar land (13115 southwest freeway, sugar land, tx 77478). The dealer determined that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 18V578000 (service brakes, hydraulic) and the repairs had to covered by the owner. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 117,000.

The vehicle braking system become rigid at low speed (approx 3mph or so) as if the power brake system fails. The vehicles stopping distance changes and the vehicle continues to roll while pressing the brake pedal toward the floor. This issue resulted in damage to my garage door while backing the vehicle into the driveway. The issue is best described in the pending investigation regarding the GM braking system located under Chevrolet Silverado recalls. I was made aware of the investigation after researching the issues I have had with my vehicles brakes. The investigation statement describes the issue as a problem with degrading brake vacuum component.
