engine failure at 72,400 miles
I purchased my Silverado in May 2019 from Pineland Chevrolet in NJ. It ran fine and never had a problem. With about 44000 miles, the engine started a light "tapping" noise. I took it directly to the local Chevrolet dealer "Gettle" in Punta Gorda Florida 33950. They showed me the rollers on the lifters that were deteriorating. They replaced the faulty parts under warranty. Prior to this, and after, I had religiously changed the oil and filters every 5-6000 miles since first buying the car as 'new'. I only towed once in May 2019 a small U-haul unit from NJ to Florida.
I had no problems with the vehicle until about early/mid July 2024 when the engine made a flutter noise after driving 3 or 4 miles to have dinner. After dinner, it made the noise again. The next day, I went to the post office and heard nothing. Still, I intended to go to a local repair shop that had an excellent reputation. Leaving the post office the car started 'tapping' loudly. I drove the 1.5 mile to Walt's Garage in town at a low speed. The tapping now was louder. I kept the speed under 20mph.
NOTE: NO WARNING LIGHTS WENT ON. Walt's Garage looked at it over the weekend and called the following Monday. They said I was running on only 3 cylinders and there was NO OIL IN THE ENGINE! The only option was to replace the engine with a used engine. The cost? $14,001.00 but I'm a veteran and got $50. off. So the final price for a used engine was $13,969.00. The engine was replaced with another engine like the one that came out and it had 62,000 miles on it. I immediately went online looking to replace the vehicle. It took a large chunk out of my IRA. I sold the car to Carvana and bought another vehicle from them at the same time.
Update from Jul 31, 2025: I filed a complaint with CarComplaints.com
I just received an update that mentioned problems with the Chevy 1500 Silverado like mine (2019)
It mentions a recall....but I'VE SINCE SOLD MY CAR SHORTLY AFTER THE ENGINE WAS REPLACED BY A NON CHEVY RELATED DEALER. "WALT'S AUTO REPAIR" HAS A VERY GOOD REPUTATION, UNLIKE THE LOCAL CHEVY DEALER WHO I THINK WAY OVER CHARGED ME ON PREVIOUS REPAIRS TO ANOTHER CAR I OWNED AND THEY (GETTLE) DOES NOT HAVE A VERY GOOD REPUTATION.
Do I have any recourse? Is my warranty (no longer valid after 50k miles) or recourse with GMC/Chevrolet a dead end? I spent $14,000.oo to have a USED engine installed to replace the faulty Chevy/GMC engine. Then sold the vehicle as soon as I could to Carvana for another brand.

2019 chevy 1500 rst 5.3 118k miles maintained at the dealership oil changes recalls transmission flushes all the scheduled maintanance driving home from from work everything was fine. Stopped at a gas station left the station truck was slow to accelerate felt a vibration like a miss fire slight tapping noise could be heard smoothed out at 55 mph no warning light at all thought ok might be a bad coil pack so drove home dealing with what i thought was a easy fix. Got it home turned it off checked the oil hmmm A quart low added oil. Turned the truck back on slight tapping kinda went away but a loud metal knocking sound just when starting. This was a Friday afternoon dealership is closed so got ahold of a well known local mechanic had the truck towed there on Monday while the tow truck driver was driving the truck up on the flat bed the dashboard lit up like a christmas tree with all the warning lights.
Ok great get it to the mechanic who was busy on other vehicles said he would look at it. I went back two days later he said he started it told me sounds like there is something loose metal inside the engine and I may need a whole new engine. Told me it would be around 10k today is nov 8th its still at the shop been there a month still waiting to hear from the mechanic to see if i need a new engine or not. From what I've read about the 5.3 engines theses days and from what I've heard from other people who have and own the 1500s sounds like i need new lifters and cam shaft or a new engine either or ill pay for it and when its repaired and ready for me to pick it up its going from the shop to a dealership to get traded in i will not be buying another garbage motors vehicle GM like a rock yeah ok more like an egg shell seems like GM builds their trucks to last two months after you pay them off or two days after your warranty expires disposable trucks that are way to expensive to be having new engines put in them after 100k miles.
