I was driving into the driveway at home and noticed a noise behind Chevrolet 2000G high top conversion van. I didn't see anything initially from the rear view mirrors. I later discovered the spare tire was lying in the street. The steel cable that held it up at the bottom of the van broke completely. I was lucky it happened in our driveway. If we were going down an interstate it could cause a serious accident if someone were following me very close. I wonder if anyone else have reported this incident. There appeared to be no other mechanism attached to keep the spare tire from falling off. I now have a new one on order. If the safety department was interested I would ask the dealer to keep that steel cable that broke.

While driving at approximately 25 mph cable that holds the spare tire in position at the base of the vehicle snapped inadvertently. The tire fell from under the vehicle into traffic....a car behind consumer's vehicle was alert to see the tire coming, stopped and avoided hitting tire.

Spare tire tools not correct. I do not have access to my spare tire. Female end of lowering tool not the correct size to engage the male end located at the end of the tube assembly. Upon having a flat tire I was stranded in between towns.this would be very dangerous for for women carrying infants and young children.

The cable holding up my spare tire on my 2000 Z-71 Silverado pickup broke, dropping the spare tire onto the road. Fortunately I was on a road early in the morning just pulling through a intersection and wasn't pulling my horse trailer.

When trying to change the spare you must insert a rod and turn to bring the spare down. The rod fails to connect properly as a result you are unable to lower the spare. When roadside assistance was contacted they said there were many instances just like ours. The dealership explained that the spare was tightened too much causing the shaft(which passes directly over the tire) to bend. My husband, daniel R. noriz, has a 2000chevy Silverado Z71. His VIN # is 2gcek19T6Y329756. His truck had the same problem. We have stopped to help a 2000gmc Sierra owner bring his spare down as well. He was not aware of this problem and was having trouble bringing his spare down. My sister-in-law has a 2000 GMC Sierra with the same problem.
