Just bought this truck and there is a clunking, thumping, in the steering column. My mechanic says there is a problem with all full size GM products, GM needs to fix this with a permanent fix. How can this not be a safety issue? I bought this truck for safety of my family.

The steering column in my 2004 Chevy Silverado makes clunking sounds and causes vibrations that alter the steering. I took it to GM while it was under warranty they said they repaired the problem, but about 20miles later it started again, have just delt with it since but seems to be getting worst. I bought another 2004 Silverado it too does this clunking and vibrating, evidently this is a very common problem, along with the speedometer not working on both my trucks.

Clunking in intermediate steering shaft. This is the 2nd time in 35,000 miles the intermediate steering shaft needed to be greased. GM did not have a fix for the problem other than greasing it again. It will need to be greased again in ~ 10K miles...this is unacceptable!

2004 Chevrolet Silverado...the steering column makes a horrible clunking noise. We have had it replaced several times under warranty but now there's no warranty and these parts and labor are too expensive to fix. The dealer says and I know from owning another 2003 Chevrolet Suburban than this is a major problem with these year model trucks and SUVS. We shouldn't have to pay for something they can obviously see is wrong! sometimes it feels like the steering is not acting right because of it and I feel unsafe driving in these conditions. Please help!!!!

Silverado 2500 4WD 8-cyl Diesel

  • Automatic transmission
  • 18,000 miles
I am experiencing the steering clunk that is associated with Chevrolet's trucks. Upon turning it in in for service I was told that it would cost $280 to fix it. I only drive my truck approx 6K miles per year under very light duty. It is unacceptable for a heavy duty vehicle that wears out from very little light use to be sold like this. The truck has 27,700 miles now and started having the problem at approx 18K miles. I can only assume that this means I will have to pay about $300 every 18K miles to fix a defective, poorly engineered product. Is this part going to fail at some point and cause a loss of steering control?
