Design flaw of the transfer case allows the lubricating pump to rub on the outer case as it spins. Enough rubbing and it will create a pinhole leak through which all your transfer case oil will leak. While researching another issue with my truck I came upon this issue. My transfer case had not yet leaked so I got a 'case saver' installed, essentially a metal plate that prevents the wear on the outer case. Was charged 4 hours for the labour and the part was $35. Well worth the cost considering the alternative of replacing the entire transfer case at well over $1500-$4500 dependent on refurbished/condition/shop rate. This issue affects many chevrolet brand vehicles with the heavy duty transfer case in it, not just the silverado/sierra trucks.
