About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
2000 Chevrolet Silverado was purchased new and after 36 months the warranty expired, the driver's side door locked, and would not open. They were all power locks. Driver's door could not be opened, it would not unlock with the keyless entry or the key itself. Took vehicle to a dealer, who said there was no way they could repair the problem because they could not get the door open. They suggested cutting the door off, and they would sell consumer a new door. Did not contact GM because consumer's father worked for GM, and could lose his job if there was a complaint. Vehicle was purchased under employee discount. After about a month or 6 weeks of driving when taking key out of the ignition there was a sound from the driver's side door-it sounded as if there was a piece falling from the door. Currently, the door is unlocked and will not lock manually, with key or power. No repairs were done. As of last week the problem started with the passenger's side door. It will not unlock with key or power, similar to the problem on driver's side door.

Locks will lock without warning. When attempting to unlock from the outside with a key it will not unlock. Door lock would not unlock from the inside nor the outside with key, hand, or electrical.

Parking brake will not hold, therefore will not pass state inspection. I have talked to other Chevrolet & GM owners and they are having the same problem.
