The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado. While undergoing a state inspection, the contact was informed that the emergency brake pads were worn. The consumer has been in contact with GM, and they said that they did not have a recall. The consumer has replaced the rotors and pads. The speed was 10 mph or below.

Consumer states at 44,000 miles the rotors, pads and wheel bearings were replaced. Six months later the wheel speed ABS sensor have failed. Could not stop the vehicle when going between 2 and 8 mph. Consumer took vehicle to a Goodyear dealership, and was told there was a technical service bulletin on the ABS brakes. Number not available. Consumer was going to call General Motors today. The problem occurred regularly.

Problems began about March 2005, with anti lock brake system. Front brakes are grabbing, and calipers stay shut. When driver hits the brakes hard calipers lock. And when making turns a noise is heard, a grinding noise. In last 4 months brakes were replaced twice. Extended stopping distance is caused when this occurs. No warning lights come on, after removal, the pads were chewed up. Not worn, but damaged. Owner replaced brakes.

Contact stated: Contact was having a problem with emergency brake. The emergency brake fell apart into pieces. The repair shop replaced the brake shoe pad and the rear rotors. Also, the dealer had to replace the monitor speed sensor which indicated that the ABS was over active. While driving 10 mph vehicle made a noise while hitting the brakes. It almost caused an accident when the ABS was applied.

Intermittently the brake pedal hardened after applying the brakes several times while driving. This caused extended stopping distance, and vehicle did not stop. Vehicle was taken to the dealer, who replaced both rear drums and brake pads. However, the problem recurred. When the consumer turns the vehicle at a 90 degree angle the brakes only go down about 1 or 2 inches and are hard to push down any further. The brakes do not stop the vehicle. The consumer had to stomp on the brakes 2 to 5 times for them to stop the vehicle.

I purchased a new 2000 Chevy 3500 4 door dully. It now has 67,000 miles. The truck has worn out seven sets of brakes and at this moment it needs the 8th set plus the front rotors are cracked from excessive heat and need to be replaced. Even with new brake pads the truck will not stop as it should you must drive it like your driving in snow. I seldom drive it over 55 miles per hour unless I am on the open road with no cars in sight. I have had no accidents just several close calls. But that is a result only of my defensive driving habits. I purchased this truck for heavy hauling but the truck won't stop itself much less a loaded trailer. The dealer was happy to put new brakes on as long as the general was paying the bill but now that the 3 years 36,000 has expired it's just me and my check book.

Rotors rusted from the inside of metal outward. Appears that rear brake design or rotor parts quality is defective. Normal expected life of rear brakes is typically 50,000 to 75,000 miles. Dealer confirms that GM has had problems with this model. Contacted GM customer service but to no avail at this point.
