Sonic LT 1.4L Turbo

  • Automatic transmission
  • 62,000 miles

Shifter button started sticking inside the shifter sometime around April 2020. YouTube videos say it is an issue with the spring and hinge holding the button inside of the shifter mechanism. Seems like something I can fix myself for the cost of the repair kit, but still a huge pain in my ass! Every time I go to park my car, the key will not come out of the ignition unless I use my fingernails or a screwdriver to pry the top of the shifter up so the button pops back out.

When shifting gears, the button mechanism won't release once the lever is placed in the desired position. This makes the lever prone to sliding while driving and can put the driver at risk for accidents. Another issue with the lever is when the gear shift is placed in "PARK" position, the key cannot be released from the ignition.

shift button on the stuck gets jammed in position. HUGE safety issue as it can be accidentally shifted into R or even Park while at speed on the highway if it gets 'bumped' Also - you can't remove the keys while the button is depressed even in Park and stopped, engine off. the keys are stuck until the shift button pops back out. I've tapped the side of the shifter and sometimes it 'pops' back out or I have to shift to D and P a few times. This car Sucks
