Spark LT 1.2L I4

  • CVT transmission
  • 53,100 miles

On 17 SEP 2018 while going 60 MPH on I-65, the vehicle started beeping, the check engine light started flashing, the doors started locking and unlocking on their own, the fuel gauge went from half a tank to empty and the vehicle started to lose power. Pressing the gas would not make the car go faster; my car slowed to 40 MPH and stayed at that speed for two minutes and then lost power completely.

I had to cut over to the side of the road to prevent myself from getting into a serious accident (an idle car on an eight lane interstate would not have been a good time), turned the vehicle off and then waited 5 minutes. I turned the vehicle back on, and it ran for an additional five minutes before having the same symptoms. This happened one more time and during that time is when I took the video I've included. You can see the fuel magically rise one bar as I'm going 50 merging onto the freeway.

The next day, 18 SEP 2018, I had it towed to my mechanic who said that based on the ODB2 scan on the vehicle that the engine computer wasn't talking to any of the other systems and that they couldn't fix this problem; it had to be taken to a Chevrolet dealership. So, I towed it there and, as of 28 SEP 2018, the vehicle is still at the dealership. On 26 SEP 2018 I called the service dept at the dealership and they said that they have to run a wire trace to figure out which wire is shorting out the system; no ETA on repair.

Update from Oct 26, 2018: The mechanics had initially thought the fuse box was the culprit, replaced that but then the rear defroster would keep pulling from the battery and overheating the battery. I eventually couldn't take the wait anymore (and, let's be honest, all trust in the vehicle was shattered anyway) and after 5 weeks and 2 days I traded-in the vehicle for a different one.

Car has very little acceleration, center console lights turn off and radio shuts off. Went to start vehicle and it wouldn't start. Was able to jump start it but had to jump it every time I tried to turn it on. Took it into the dealership and was told it was the battery. I stated the battery wasn't old enough to be dead and was told it was definitely the battery; even after suggesting the problem could be other than the battery. Dealership replaced the battery and the car started without a problem. I was also told all other problems were due to the battery going out. Now, not even seven months later (mileage of 42,000), the car won't start again. Will be taking it back into the dealership AGAIN tomorrow.

Spark LT 3.2L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 35,000 miles

After hours of sitting in a car dealership, I financed a 2014 Chevrolet Spark. The next morning I woke up and went out to start the car and it was completely dead. Frustrated, I called the dealership and the salesperson came to my house. My neighbor jumped the car with battery cables and the dealership had the car inspected in the shop. The shop performed the inspection on all parts of the car and it came back completely clear. The car has left me stranded everywhere. My son picked up a jumper that doesn't need cables and we use that to start the car. We think this issue is the battery however no one can confirm this for certain. If this car is having this many issues right off of the lot, I fear to think what my experience will be over the next five years. My gut feeling is this car is going to die way before I make my final car payment.
