Bought this vehicle a few days before the first incident. I drove it home from over two hours away, drove it all around the day before, no problems. Then I was driving down a bypass at about 60 miles an hour and the engine shut off! I had no power steering, nothing! I was able to pull over, shut it off and once I turned it back over it was just fine. So I cautiously started driving, it happened again a few miles down the road only this time it stalled then regained power and quickly shut off again. Once engine was turned off and restarted, it was fine, it did this to me 5 times within 5 miles. I almost got hit two of those times by other vehicles, once when I was turning onto a road. I am glad my kids were not in it. I am scared to drive on two lane roads without room to pull over.

With cruise control on at 70mph, attempted to change from left to right lane. Another car sped up the right lane to pass me. Turned steering wheel back to left lane and suddenly had no control over steering, braking and the steering wheel started violently shaking. Car rolled twice, over metal median and turned 180 degrees facing the opposite direction on the interstate w/ roof crushed in. Neither side or front air bags deployed. Front and sides smashed in and frame bent. Vehicle was deemed to be totaled by state farm. Have been driving 40 years and have never had an accident in my life. Only good thing was the seatbelt held tight as I was hanging upside down when the car finally stopped. The day before this occurred I noticed that the stability control system would randomly engage during straight driving on a perfectly dry surface. I purchased this vehicle brand new from the dealer in 2004 and the car was meticulously maintained. (it looked brand new).

Transmission slippage; driver side mirror defects; head lamps & loose steering column. Biggest issue is transmission. While driving on highway at 70 mph, transmission began slipping without any prior warning. Situation was extremely dangerous as it was night-time driving with little or no opportunity to get vehicle off the interstate. Other family vehicles have had the same issue with the transmission going out without warning. Also, the driver side mirror goes out gradually, as the liquid that defrosts the mirror goes bad and leaks into the mirror. This mirror has already been replaced once, at the cost of $400+. this mirror is also a hazard as the driver is unable to use the mirror to adequate lane and traffic maneuvering. The steering column always seems to be loose. Nothing has been done, as of today's date, to correct the transmission issue as it is a costly repair.

We own a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban with approximately 50,000 current miles. We purchased the vehicle used at 20,000 miles. At some point after 36000 we started noticing a "clunking" in the steering column when we would turn the wheel. I an employed at a school and it has had to have this same problem repaired on 3 of it's 2004 Chevrolet 1500 Suburban, each with just over the 36,000 warranty mileage. Each cost about $370 to repair.

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban. While driving approximately 35 mph, the steering wheel required greater effort to turn. There was a low power response when the brake pedal was depressed. In addition, the service brake booster warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection. The VIN was excluded from NHTSA campaign id number 05V043000 (service brakes, hydraulic), although the failures were identical. The failure and current mileages were 23,400. Updated 08/28/09. Updated 08/31/09.

I have a 2004 Chevy Suburban that has a bad vibration and clunking noise coming from the steering wheel. I have addressed this issue with the dealership and they state their is no recall, but I know of 4 people with Chevy trucks with the same issue. I have also done some research online and found multiple people complaining of the same issue. I am not sure if left unfixed what might happen, but I really do not want to get in an accident and hurt myself or others. I only hope with your help we can find a solution to this problem with Chevrolet vehicles. Thank you.

Under warranty, brought car in for loose, vibrating steering wheel in 2004. Dealership did something to make it quite but 3 months later it was doing it again. Took it in again and they said to get the car greased. It only lasts a little while. So has to be repeatedly done. I'm afraid something is going to break.

Clunking noise in the steering column, dealer said it was the intermediate steering shaft, called Chevrolet (they gave me a case #)since internet search exposed many others same problem. They have a tsb #000235003 about this and how to fix the problem. Chevrolet wants me to pay a $99 diagnosis fee and they might help me with the problem.

Under warranty, brought car in for loose, vibrating steering wheel in 2006. Dealership brought to our attention the need to replace a bolt on the steering shaft, was a warranty repair covered by GM and we did not have to pay (issued as recommended repair only if consumer brought to attention. Problem went away. Problem recurred in fall 2008 (car now out of warranty) identical symptoms as before. Contacted dealership again to complain, they stated, out of warranty have to pay for new part replacement. Feel this is a flawed engineered component on vehicle from start, should not have to pay for something that is not safe in the first place.

Knocking noise while driving at slow speed seems to be coming from the steering system. My brother had a 2004 Chevy also and it happened to his vehicle also. This has been going on for over a year. Because the vehicle is not under the 36 K warranty the dealer will not repair this. I am sure this is occurring in other 2004 Chevy Suburban.

Terrible knocking in turning steering wheel--repaired under warranty--states shaft, intermediate replace-mileage was 35K now at 55K same problem only louder and wheel seems loose--called dealer--needs to replace shaft again for a cost of $300--I drive my grandchildren to school and take long trips--dealer said car is safe-I am about to make along trip and cannot get the car serviced until my return in a week--this is worrisome when I feel I could lose control of the car if something should break-why would a second drive shaft be faulty as was the first. I have read other complaints about this and my dealer says it is happening to a lot of 2004 Suburban and they expect a recall.

Suburban 4WD 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 5,000 miles
2004 Chevy Suburban 2500 series with quadrasteer. The rear wheel steering faults approximately every 5 miles, often when exiting a turn. This can leave the rear wheels full left (or right) if the turn was tight causing the vehicle to crab down the road sideways. If the road is not wide and the driver is not extremely aware a sideswipe accident could easily occur. The rear wheels slowly self center after 10 to 15 seconds. Vehicle has been back to the dealer many times. They either say they have replaced a sensor, tightened a loose connection, or no problem found. Sometimes it will be ok for 20 miles or so but the problem always recurs. Unable to get it fixed.
