SPEEDOMETER does not work. Electrical system is haywire. Sometimes engine doesn't turn off when key is turned to off. Unnecessary automatic gear shifting at illogical times. Lights frequently burn out. The surface of all the dash buttons rubbed off.

I understand this is an ongoing problem with this vehicle. Why don't they make a recall?
This is very expensive for a senior citizen on S.S.
I can't get the car inspected without repairing it. I don't have the money to fix it. This is terrible. To top it off, when i called gm, they answered in another country! Adding insult to injury! What's up gm? You want us to buy American cars? Then treat us like you should. You make mistakes, you fix them.
My speedometer is broken and i have to replace the whole cluster. Around $620.00.
Come on gm, step up to the plate and recall this speedometer, or fix it at yourexpense.
Please excuse my spelling, I'm so mad i could spit!

Speedometer stops working! Then it starts working...wierd!!! Inaccurate...now I am reading about it and it seems like it is a BIG problem...why didn't they call us.

I got a letter and still have it. It stated that if it wasn't acting up not to bring it in until it started. In small letters it had a milage restriction and now they will not fix it because it is over the milage indicated in letter which I thought was a recall. I did not get in a hurry because it only acted up very little and my husband was sick with cancer so I could not be without a car. When it went out and was able to carry it in they said that was just a letter not a recall. Now they will not fix and it is completely quit working and things are not so well at my house to just run out and by a new part. They should replace it.

Speedometer read 50 mpg turning a corner and I know I was going about 15 mpg. By the time I got home it read 110 mpg! Now it is stuck at about 110 mpg. I can get it down about 5mpgs every time I start it but once I drive it it will go back up. Taking to to my dealer tomorrow and need to highway drive to get there. (Help!)
Update from Nov 10, 2010: Just talked to my Chevy dealer. The cluster needs to be replaced (and ordered) at $432.00. My 17 year old drives this car so what can I do?

speedometer gets stuck at different speeds . happens more when its cold . out of warrenty any advice on how to get it fixed at dealer expense ?
- Hector C., Rosedale, MD, US
Well, the problem started in the beginning of the year, very intermittent. Seems like everytime the dash would warm up, ie- defroster running,. The dealer at the time said there was nothing on it or anything they could do since it was not all the time. Well as time progressed, it got worse to the point were now, it operates for about 10 miles than quits regardless of temp, I been fighting with a dealer network who I have bought personally 10 cars from in the past 10-15 years. and since I just hit 70K miles, they are telling me that GM will cover the dash cluster, but will cost $150 for the labor,..But if they would of returned my calls last week, I would of been under the 70K mark to were it would of been covered 100%. So, I think dealer will move on it. I know $150 isnt much compared to some repairs, but, GM and the dealerships are aware this is a problem, and as someone else said in this forum, its on time not mileage that makes these go bad. I can understand the dealerships not always get full support from GM, so for this labor cost, the dealership gets to eat it. But, Im sure they get plenty of somepensation from GM through the years with warranty claims that may have not been needed. so I have no sympathy for them, I just want them to stand behind their product as should any good mfg. I have a 86 Toyota truck with 180K on it, the truck is falling apart, and it still has the manual cable driven spedo. original..and is still working. GM has to take this one with their head down low and make it right.

The speedometer at a stand still will not zero. But the worst part is that it reads faster than I am going, 30 to 35 mph faster. This just all of a sudden happened, no explanation. Also, a while back, the radio will not pick up any channels, not even static. (AM of FM)

The speedometer on my 2004 Tahoe starting going crazy at about 68000 miles. Today the speedometer displayed 90 mph while sitting in my garage. Yesterday it was 45 mph. This seems to be common with this truck, but I haven't been able to find a recall by Gm.
- John M., Chicago, IL, US
Seems to me that when GM is fully aware of the same part failing on a certain make of automobile, the very least that they could do is make it right by their customers. GM is aware that they have a speedometer problem with 2004 Tahoe's. Who is the southeastern representative for GM for Georgia? Please advise. We need to talk!!!
- Ml P., Dallas, GA, US
I bought the truck on Saturday and had to take it back on Monday they said it was ok but it is still acting up what should i do or who should i call about fixing the problem

Around two weeks ago I get this letter form GM "extending" the warranty coverage to
70,000 miles on the instrument cluster---three days ago my speedometer starts reading any where from 70-120+ mph IN PARK-----While driving it simply buried itself past 120+mph. I called GM customer service--their response-->because I wasn't within warranty
parameters(<70,000miles) I will not be covered because the failure is due to wear and tear.
LET ME GET THIS RIGHT GM--I SHOULD NOT EXPECT A PRINTED CIRCUIT TO LAST
FOUR YEARS ON ONE OF YOUR FLAGSHIP VEHICLES---I HAD THE MISFORTUNE TO HAVE A DEFECTIVE PART YOU PUT IN LAST A LITTLE LONGER THAN EXPECTED--SO I GET TO PAY THE PRICE--SAME STORY AS KLUNKING IN STEERING COLUMN

The speedometer on our 2004 Tahoe drops to below zero when traveling at interstate speeds. This has happened four times. Each time has been when we were out of state traveling or in the wee hours of the morning on a weekend.
We have received two letters from GM telling us about the instrument panel problems and telling us to take the vehicle in for repairs if we experience this problem. The gauge is always working by the time we get to the dealership, so GM refuses to do the repairs. They say if they can’t see the problem, they won’t replace the part, this refusal even though they know there are problems with their instrument panel and have mailed out thousands of letters stating that fact.
I became so frustrated after spending over on hour on the phone today with four different people that I requested a written statement of the refusal. They will not give me a written statement to that effect, nor will they let me record them saying that they will not repair the problem. They also stated that they were noting in our file that I might try to record the conversation.

My speedometer went out a few weeks ago. When sitting in Drive it registers about 70 miles per hour. When driving at 65 mph, it veers off the the far right to the bottom of the 120 mph mark! Yikes!! Helps!!

We checked with a GM dealer to see if they know what the problem is and 2 different dealerships told us that they are seeing this problem a lot now. Well it has to be a defect from the factory and GM should have to recall and repair this problem. It sucks when you do not know how fast or slow you are going and you stand a real good chance of getting a traffic ticket either going to slow or too fast. It seems to me GM should fix this, we should not be having this kind of problem at 53000 miles for sure and evidently a lot of people are experiencing this problem. They need to stand behind their products.

Speedometer reads 50mph with the car off. While driving, speeds could show that I'm going 120mph. I've tried disconnecting the battery but that didnt work. Need help.
- bgibbs, Canton, GA, US
The speedometer started going way above the M.P.H. you were actually going, at times it would go to what I think was about 140. You then have to turn the engine off and restart it and keep doing this until it gets back to zero. Now it is pegged and will not go back to zero. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The instrument cluster has stepper motors behind it that power the gauges. They can be bought on eBay for around $14 plus shipping.
They are soldered into the instrument cluster. So the solder must first be removed and then the new stepper motor can be soldered into place.
