This issue has been going on for several months. Every morning between 4 and 7 minutes after we start the engine, we get the message 'Tighten Fuel Cap'. Every Day. ONLY for the first start-up for the day. Otherwise it doesn't happen. And, it doesn't matter what time of day the initial start-up is. This can happen for a week, or maybe a month, and then it will kick the Check Engine Light on. The code makes reference to the Tighten Fuel Cap.
The vehicle is in the shop again.
The vehicle has passed 2 smoke tests.
We've replaced the gas cap 4 times (locking and non-locking, all OEM)
We've replaced the evap solenoid
We've replaced the purge solenoid
I'm told we need to consider changing the evap cannister
(Pardon me if I'm not using the correct terms - I'm doing this from memory and am not a mechanic)
The vehicle is always in a stopped and turned off state when we remove the gas cap. We do tighten the cap as directed hearing the required number of clicks (cap says 3 clicks, we do more).
The reason I rated this as Really Awful - without a fix I cannot pass a smog test. We want to use the vehicle for a 2,000 mile roadtrip and I refuse to do so knowing there is an undetermined problem as I don't want to get stuck somewhere nor do I want to kill the vehicle. So on top of making payments on the new-to-me vehicle I purchased 2 years ago, we get to rent a vehicle, blah blah blah. When we return, I want to sell because we're moving and need a 4WD. I want to make sure this vehicle is in good shape for the next person.
Otherwise, this is a great vehicle.
