About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
Stopped to check air pressure in tires, that's when I saw the front driver side tire with a 6 inch sidewall separation leading from the rim sidewall to the tire tread. The rear driver side has a 3 inch separation starting into the sidewall.

I am the original owner of a 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe with all original equipment. The vehicle standard equipment includes a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). The problem I have is that all five (spare tire) tire valve stem caps have seized on the valve stem which prevents adding air to the tires. The problem is due to corrosion between the contacting surfaces only of the valve stem and valve stem cap. The corrosion is due to the reaction between the dissimilar metals of the valve stem cap and valve stem. This can cause a safety issue if you have low tire pressure and cannot add air to the tire. Not to mention that the repair is significant as the TPMS sensor must be replaced. The valve stem and valve stem cap are the original parts that came on the new car. I took my car to the Chevrolet dealer and they were not able to remove the valve stem caps without breaking the valve stems. I a person needs to add air to the tire they will likely end up breaking the valve stem.

The service tire monitor warning displayed frequently and reportsed that a tire pressure reading was unavailable. This happened since day 1. each time the vehicle has been brought in for service, the problem has been reported, and an attempt to correct has been performed. Two years later, after at least 5 attempts to correct the problem, it still existed. Thiswas a major annoyance as each time the monitor waring displayed it caused you to inspect the tires, and check pressures to ensure proper inflation, especially since tires were made by Firestone.
