This Transmission whines and jerking has happened several times over the past 3 years, maybe once a month. Sometimes it seems less and sometimes more serious, sometimes just the whining noise without the jerking. The first few times this happened, it was very depressing to think that it might take Transmission work to fix it, but luckily, I accidentally discovered that if I stop in a safe spot, turn the engine off and get out, get back in and restart, then it worked fine for another month or so. I also noticed that, if I just stop and turn it off and then back on again, it didn't help. I have to actually... --> at least open and shut the door before turning it back on. It seems as if it is resetting the car's computer and that has some effect on the transmission.

the first sign something was wrong was a whinning noise, like a remote control car being pushed. Nobody heard it except me. Finally after a couple of months, I went to chevy dealer who told me of a bad part in my tranny. He also said it would make since to replace the entire tranny. It seems to really act up on hills. I can drive days with no prob but when it kicks in, omg, I wanna pull over. I added Lucas Transmission solution which helped a great deal with the jerk. But my problem now is rebuild or replace? and I need to mention my tranny fluid is black.

We have owned this car for 10 years now, bought it brand new. After 3 years replaced the intake manifold. We have replaced the brakes twice and have done regular maintenance faithfully. About two years ago I noticed the car would sometimes shift hard. Next time I got in the car, no problem. Had my spouse drive the car, nothing. Had my mechanic drive the car, nothing. Of course, since I a woman, it's all in my head! Well, finally one day while my husband was driving the van it happened to him. We made an appointment at a transmission specialist shop to have the transmission fluid flushed and checked. You guessed it, nothing wrong. It must be me, I thought. After hours and hours of research on the internet I find out this is a very common problem for not only Chevy vehicles but most GM vehicles between 1997 and 2002, maybe longer. I was advised by an expert from Idaho, via the web, to let it be if I could put up with the occasional annoyance. I also found many people who had replaced or repaired their transmission to only eventually have the same problem. So I am coming up on 2 years of putting up with this annoying problem. The transmission will kick out in hotter weather much more often than in cold weather. It seems in the warmer months it happens every time I go out, and in the colder months weeks to a month will go by; that is my favorite time of year to drive this van, it does drive exceptionally well in the snow. It is annoying, but I am going to drive that van until it doesn't go any more. If only GM would make a car without so many issues.

Just as others have stated previously the problem is described as a jerking, slipping from gear to gear up and down through the gears. We took the vehicle to a couple shops who both stated replace the transmission or rebuild it. We had owned the vehicle for nearly 2 months...no warranty. It sat for 2 more months while we considered and saved for the repair. My wife was looking online ...Googled the problem and came up with this possible solution. We were without the vehicle for nearly 6 months over this situation the first time. The part is about 50 bucks, but the labor is why the repair is that high...at 40 an hour at the time. I found a shop that would just do as I asked..they did it and I drove the vehicle for a couple years until the next major problem.

We have had this van for 2 years and from the time we got it we have had problems with a few things. The worst thing is periodically, the transmission "jumps" and "jerks" into gear. This only happened once in awhile. Well, a couple of days ago I had to go to a seminar for work in a city around 75 miles from home. No problem. Or so I thought. On the way there, my husband and I (thank God I insisted he go with me "just in case")were going up a hill and the "low coolant level" light came on. This happens all the time too, the light comes on or the hot coolant light comes on, the temp gauge goes to HOT and then we turn the engine off, sit for a minute and it is fine! So when I pulled back onto the road, the transmission started "jumping" and "jerking" really bad and we had to put up with it until we got to our hotel room and could let the van sit and "rest". This was all during rush hour, construction etc in a city. What fun that was. My brother-in-law who is a mechanic said for us to change the tranny fluid and intake gasket and that should help. I sure hope this works, this is my only vehicle and I really do not have the money for big repair bills or to get another vehicle. GGGRRR
