I has 4 hours from home and the car just flat out died. Was driving when I heard a large sound like I had run over something (even though there was clearly nothing in road). All the lights on the inside started flashing. Windshield wipers started running. Had no control of the car. Could not steer. Could not put car in park. Car would not turn off. Smoke smell filled the car. Was expecting it to burst into flames at that point. After about 5 minutes, I was able to at least get the car to turn off. Roadside assistance towed me to the closest dealer.
Turns out it is was the Alternator. I did some research and found that this is common to the point where Chrysler actually has a safety recall. Unfortunately the recall is on the 160 Volt alternators, not the 180 Volt. Exact same issue mind you, but they have apparently not had anyone die yet from a 180 Volt alternator dying without warning. Or they have not met the minimum number of complaints to require them to recall that one too. Obviously this is an issue with this car however Chrysler does not stand behind its products. My last 5 cars have been Chrysler products (Pacifica, Wrangler, Wrangler, 300 and Ram 1500). This trend will likely end.

My wife called me on her way home from work telling me that the car was making a "humming" noise in the radio then the radio turned off and a message appeared that read "battery safe mode" She said that the radio would not turn on. Then she said that she started to smell a "Burning" smell like plastic or wires. My wife is a school teacher that luckily works only 5 miles from home. Then my wife said that lots of smoke started to come from under hood as soon as she drove up our driveway. I told her to immediately turn the car off. I got home from work 3 hours later and I could still smell that burning smell my wife was talking about. This car is the fully loaded model with all the bells and whistles that did NOT come cheap at 48,000. My wife and I are so angry and disappointed since our car only has 48k miles. The fact that there is so many other complaints about this issue and no recalls have been posted is very sad. Chrysler should be ashamed for not paying attention to this serious matter that could someday result in vehicle catching fire and someone losing their life. My family have been Chrysler for over 40 years since the days of Plymouth. Perhaps it's time to change.
