About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
: the contact stated while driving 30 mph to purchase a replacement tire for the vehicle, a rattling noise was heard. While the vehicle was at the independent repair shop, the mechanic attempted to restart the vehicle, but it would not start and made a rattling noise. The mechanic determined that the timing chain was broken. There were no warning signals prior to the failure. The noise began on the day of the incident. The engine was replaced 2 to 3 years prior to this incident. Through research on the internet, the contact found many complaints regarding the engine for this year, make and model. There was a class action suit on the internet as well. The vehicle had regular maintenance and oil changes performed.

Was driving North on mi 31 bypass heading for schroeder motors to pick up my Dodge Ram pick-up truck that was in for service. Turned onto napier rd going West and heard a clapping sound like a baseball card in the spokes of a bike. I thought a piece of paper got into the fan blade. There were no warning lights that came on. Just as I pulled into schroeder motor mall the car died and that was the end. It rolled to a stop right into a parking spot. I had there mechanics look into it and he had told me that the water pump looked like it failed and caused the timing chain to slip resulting into warped valves. I was given an estimate to replace engine for about $6700. They were going to allow me $1000 for my troubles off of the bill. Mechanic put all of the parts in my trunk and I had the car towed home where it will set until I get some answers.

Air conditioning/heating unit does not cool or heat properly. Has been investigated regularly without Chrysler dealer "finding" anything. On particular date below it was a very cold morning, used heat and drove 3 kids 20 miles. Stopped for half hour, got back in car and car sounds like a diesel engine - rough and loud. I was alone with the 3 kids. Asked a couple of men to listen, they thought cylinder(s) were gone as noise lowered when engine revved. (by the way, this car has had 2 transmissions already, with 73,000 miles). Limped home scared to death on interstate highway with the 3 kids. Stopped at service station, told not to drive as engine was failing. Called aaa and they came and towed to Chrysler dealer. Dealer was unable to replicate the diesel sound and "found nothing wrong." Today is Nov 24th 2003 and this morning the same sound is back in my engine. The heat only works when I am moving, not at idle, and leaves a very odd smell in the car if the car is left idling with the heat on. I have a 5 month old, a 5 year old and an 8 year old, I am getting very frightened to drive this car with them in it anymore. I did an online search and found that this ac/heat problem is prevalent in this model (Chrysler Concorde 1999) and can create sludge in the engine that causes sudden engine failure. I want this fixed and I want you to get after Chrysler about this!

Engine started making loud knocking noise. Had the car towed to Chrysler. Chrysler reports that the timing chain came loose and caused severe damage to the water pump and engine and the timing chain, water pump and engine need to be replaced. They report that there were no oil leaks and filter and plug were in place and dealer could not explain cause. I have spoken to Chrysler Corp. And the dealership. Chrysler agreed to help with repair until they found out the engine was damaged and needed to be replaced. The repair will be 6,700 dollars. I see there are other reports of this same problem. Would like to know if others received any financial assistance from Chrysler and what my next steps should be.
