PT Cruiser Limited V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 90,000 miles

When we were driving it, it would come to a complete stop. Most times it would start back up. This happened for a year every now and then. We would take the gas cap off and it would go farther than with it on. Been at the Chrysler Dealer for almost a year. Still no repair.

PT Cruiser Touring

  • Automatic transmission

Driving along and all of a sudden car starts to buck and engine starts to stall. Thank God I was on a city street when this happened as the car stopped and I lost steering. Called for tow but by the time the tow arrived the car started again. I went three weeks without a problem then it did it again and I almost had a wreck. Took it to the mechanic but could not duplicate problem. Drove it another two weeks and it happened again. Now the car just sits in the drive way because my wife and daughter refuse to drive because it is unsafe. Any ideas PLEASE!

Update from Dec 2, 2015: I think I found the problem and wanted to share. It seems Chrysler has had a lot of issues with their TIPM module and this affects a lot of various componets such as the fuel pump, lights, windows horn, etc. . In doing my research many people had been complaining about loss of power and engine stalling along with the horn starting to honk for no reason. A law suit was filed against Chrysler by several people and it was determined that Chrysler built vehicles, including PT cruisers, jeeps and others all had the same issue from 2006 to 2010 and all of these were corrected by replacement of the TIPM. Keep in mind this is an expensive proposition, about $1,000 so you may want to think about it. I am having mine replaced today and will sell the vehicle when completed because I will feel good about not sticking someone else with this issue.

Mechanics cannot detect if there is anything wrong with your TIPM unless it is actually happening when they are checking the car. This will not come up on your in car computer.

Ok so I have read other posts on this forum about the dang'on PT Cruiser and realized others have had the same thing happen, where the car powers down and stalls right in the middle of driving. That is what has been happening lately. I know when it is happening because all those icon lights on the dasboard (such as seatbelt, engine, airbag, brake, etc). will light up at the same time the car stalls like it is about to cut off. I have been blessed so far that it did not completely cut off yet, but I am not taking any more chances. This car has been nothing but trouble since I purchased it over a year ago. I am so scared because I drive on the highway to and from work and don't want it happening in the middle of the highway. I have been staying in the slow lane close to the shoulder just in case.

Anyway, I am gong to take it to a mechanic, because from looking at other posts and talking to other people, the dealer won't fix it correctly. I thought it was just my bad luck, but it seems this is a common PT Cruiser problem. SMH...these things should be recalled. I will update post if the mechanic finds something, or even if he doesn't.
