I had wanted a Sebring convertible since they came out and I found a low mileage used one last summer. With just 60,000 the engine blew and I had to have it rebuilt. I am now having the same problem everyone on here mentioned. The car just dies while you are driving it. Sometimes it starts right back up and sometimes it is really hard to get it started. This is the second time I have had this problem with this car. I put a new distributor in the first time it happened and that seemed to fix it for a while but now (after 2,000 miles on new distributor) it is worse than ever. I am not a professional mechanic but I put the new distributor on the first time and after spending the 4 hours it took to disassemble, what seemed like half the engine, the car ran great for a little while but I just don't know what to do. Someone please help me!

It is a shame more auto shops don't know anything about 1996 Chrysler Sebring convertibles. The car would stall while driving and I drive 50 miles to work each way. I had mine at two shops, neither had a clue. So I had to do my own research!! The first time it stalled out I took it to the shop they put in a crank shaft sensor. Well 6 months later it was doing it again, so this was when I started researching. I had found that a lot of people had fixed the distributors in these cars and it would work, so when the auto mechanics did not have a clue I recommended doing the distributor. Well that was fixed, but the car would not start, so I went to purchase a new battery (had no clue how old the one in there was) and asked them to check the electrical system while they were at it. Well, the battery was shot (no reading at all) and they told me the alternator was bad. This could have been the problem all along, but because a lot of mechanics had no clue I have now spent at least $1000 on this problem alone. Hope this helps someone else!!!!

I have a 1996 Chrysler Sebring JXi Convertible and it has problems.
My car is dead right now. First it was idling bad and making like a knock, bump, jump noise and I would have to step on the gas real quick fearing that it would break down. Then one morning it just wouldn't start so my uncle did an engine check. It is saying it's the Crankshaft Position Sensor. Well I have the new part but now it's just a matter of locating it. I need to know where the hell it is and if it's difficult to fix myself?? (Well not me, but my stepdad or uncle) :) This is not the only problem I've had.....

This 2.5L LXI 1996 Chrysler Sebring stalls out at all speeds but especially when you let off the gas and coast. I've eliminated the TPS, MAP sensor, idle air control valve, fuel filter, and cylinder misfire as possible causes. The MIL is off. The exhaust is uninhibited and the car isn't labored on the highway to suggest insufficient fuel delivery from the fuel pump. It does restart. The car does idle rough. To keep it running around town it's necesary to have one foot on the gas at all times. I'd really like to know if anyone has had this before- the fuel rail has no test port because it was made by freaky deaky Mitsubishi so I don't know what the fuel pressure is. I'm thinking it may be that cheap skate design spring pressure only fuel pressure regulator bolted to the side of the fuel filter back by the fuel tank. Any experience out there?

I went into a ditch the other day, and yes, that could have something to do with it, but it doesn't make sense to me. When I'm on the highway or on a main street and I get above 35 but not quite over 55 my fricken car stalls out. It's so scary. It really is a royal pain too, because I'm freaked out to take it on the highways so I'm stuck on the city streets and traffic is terrible, not to mention the drivers--and it's winter right now and the city cares less about the main roads than they do about the highways, which I used to not mind, until I had to take them all the time. It increases travel time by at least 20 minutes, and I already work out in hudsonville. This problem didn't start until it got cold, but who knows if the weather is related or not? I sure don't. I'm scared to death that it's the tranny, but it just doesn't feel like that to me, no jerks, just stall-outs. I feel like I'm almost learning to drive a manual all over again--and really sucking at it. I'm hoping it has more to do with the battery or the fuel injector, problem is I don't have money or time to get it looked at and so it goes with most women, my car pays for it. Maybe if I would have taken better care of it sooner? I don't know I drive slower now though, make sure I always have at least a 1/4 tank of gas, I just filled the fluids. Oh, and sometimes it smells like exhaust, or like something burning, not really sure. I really need to get rid of this car and get another one... but money has the final say... and it says no way no how. :(
