Same story, 2.7, dies due to sludge caused by poor design by manufacturer. A buddy of mine who is a Chrysler mechanic said the 2.7 has a poor design and will fail regardless of how well you take care of them.
Been driving Chryslers for 30 years, switching to GM's now.

Having just replaced the water pump less than 200 miles ago, going down highway at 70 MPH the engine makes a funny noise, then stops accelerating and make a loud popping noise, Manage to get off the road and will not move any more. This car has less than 100,000 miles on it. It was bought used 2 years ago and other than failure of the plastic thermostat housing at 60,000 miles, water pump at 89000 miles have had no previous problems, oil was changed regularly. This car is in excellent condition otherwise and should have run for another 200,000 to 400,00 miles without engine failure. I presume this failure to be a rod bearing from the sound and web listing of problems. I checked the compression on each cylinder while I was replacing the water pump and all 6 cylinders were within 3 pounds of each other, and there was no previous indication of a oil or bearing failure being imminent. The oil pressure is OK, and there is no initial indication of particles in the oil or oil leaking. Now I find out CHRYSLER has been hiding all these problems from the consumer and not covering the repair cost. I have been a loyal customer for many years but not I am very disillusioned and may not ever buy another CHRYSLER Product. If anyone has a law suit going about this engine please contact me via email.

Here's the deal. I bought the car from and individual in Chattanooga Tn as a used vehicle. I drove it, my husband and I looked it over inside and out. The car was in great exterior and interior condition. There was not even one scratch on it. I asked the man if they had ever had any problems with the car. Of course, he told me no. Two weeks later after coming home from a trip in Ky, I heard a very loud noise as if I had hit something. I went ahead and turned into my driveway and the engine was knocking very badly. When I checked the oil I found out that the oil pan had been leaking and it had run dry. I put oil into it and the knocking got quiet. So I immediately drove the car to the mechanic the next day. He told me that the oil pan gasket was leaking. So I took the car back home put oil into it and made sure it had enough and drove it less than three miles. The car died in the middle of the highway. When I tried to crank it, it would only stay on long enough for me to get it out of the road. I called the people I bought the car from and asked them if they had ever had any engine trouble. She told me that the engine had been rebuilt a little while ago. Isn't an engine rebuild a major problem? Anyways the engine should still be under warranty...but get this the guy that rebuilt the engine is in jail!!!!! What a COIENCIDENCE!

i bought a 2001 chrysler Sebring from my moms boyfriend the car seemed to run well it sat for about two months then i bought it i drove the car for 3 days and put alot of miles on it the i came apon the same problem car started to run rough i ran the chk engine light and it came back with the cam sensor or the crank sensor be in the problem so i replaced the crank sensor in hopes that it would fix the problem but no it didn't now i did my home work on the car to find out that the motor is junk the sludge build up problem so now i have a garge that i am goin to do the motor swap from the 2.7 to the 3.2/3.5 wich the motor will work with that ecu and the wire harness will work as well so that will hopefully be the end of my problem now that i just spent 361.21 in parts to fix the motor as is however it makes more sense to just change to a different motor without that problem

My Sebring was bought nearly new by my older brother who used it for his job as a sales representative. My mother paid the rest of his lease in 2004 and gave the car to me after his company gave him his own car. I was in college at the time and this was an AWESOME deal...I got a newish, pretty car that drove great, looked great and was fun for cruising with friends. I wanted this car to last me a long time as I planned to go to graduate school (which equals destitution) so I took very good care of it...got my oil changed religiously, learned how to check all my fluids and everything myself to make sure everything was okay , you know, all the works. My brother gave the car to me at 89,000 miles, but in 4 years it's only at 104,000 (just drive it around town, to and from work, to stores and friends' houses really.) I had just gotten the oil changed, so I was baffled when leaving my boyfriends' house a couple of weeks ago it makes a terrible (but fairly faint) sound on start-up. I thought it was maybe the heat and it drove fine, got it home. Kept making the noise, checked my oil. It was low on oil even though I JUST got it changed a week before. I was confused and thought maybe the idiots at Jiffy Lube had not put in enough oil, but got new oil and put it in the car and it sounded okay for a day. The sound came back, and I decided to stop driving it altogether and take it to the best mechanic we have here in town. I tell him the issue and by then I had already researched the faults of this engine, so I was hardly surprised when he told me to get rid of it because of this engine. He says that I have caught it in its very early stages and could maybe get some money for the car. He stated he has had to tell countless other young women such as myself to get rid of their Sebrings and Intrepids but it was always much later than mine (i.e. engine was already shot.) He recommended I get a nice Toyota or Honda which will last me for 300,000 miles the way that I take care of my car- and I am inclined to agree. F*CK Chrysler.

We own a 2001 sebring, my wife loves the car. The engine light comes on and it makes load rapping noises brought it to the dealer and they said it needs a new motor due to oil pick up problem it would cost us 9500.00$ to fix so now we have a car we own $3500.00 on this lawn ornament. never buy a Chrysler again..

Took my car to have the air conditioner repaired. The service tech said "you've got bigger problems than the a/c, you need a new engine, I'd just trade this thing in on a new car!". Well, that would be nice, but my car is only 6.5 years old. I bought it new. I've never had a bit of problem with anything until the air went out. I've had regular oil changes and I keep up with all the routine maintenance, even have the dealer service for the regularly suggested maintenance intervals. The service tech thought it was a good thing I got 121,000 miles from that car. Is that all we can expect from our second biggest financial investment these days? Yeah, if we buy American I guess. Even my FORD Mustangs were driven for 8 and 9 years. I didn't have to get rid of my Mustangs, I just wanted a new one.... then I decided to get a "grown up car" and I picked a winner huh?
