Okay. This is ridiculous. When I bought the car from the crooked Chrysler dealers at Long Beach Chrysler and Jeep the sales person promised in writing a paint package and after the sale when I was asking about a paint repair for a little paint chip the manager said they couldn't do it and took the writing back from me. I have had my air-conditioner fan go out, the radio, the starter, the computer chip, and the airbag, all of these things failed. I paid to have items replaced. Since then the airbag has failed again. On Friday evening, September 26, leaving San Diego on the way home from picking up my son from his Navy base and about 35 minutes away from Long Beach and with no indication that there was any kind of problem or any warning lights we heard a ticking or knocking noise that suddenly got loud followed by a boom. At once the car which was in the second lane at about a speed of 65 to 70 miles per hour lost all power and we were barley able to get into the shoulder with out getting hit. Someone also pulled over to tell us that they saw fire. We looked but didn't see any. The Nice HWY Patrol guys (I say that very sarcastically) were at the scene in within two minutes as I was trying to call for a tow. They pointed out oil on the ground. Indecently I have heard three times in the last three days that tow service just pulling you off the freeway is actually free. Anyway, they asked me if I had called for a tow yet. I said I was trying to do that now. They asked if I had triple A. I said that my mom does and is on her way. They said NO, she would have to be here right now and that they are calling for a tow that will cost over $100 dollars. 2 minutes later the tow truck got there and said they are charging 160 dollars to get my vehicle off the road or 340 dollars to take it to Long Beach. I had it towed to LB. Engine is blown and the dealer said they don't have problems with this engine and that it is a good engine. If anyone is in a class action law suite against Chrysler I would like to be included. Please let me know how to be involved in this.

in November of 2004 i purchased a 2001 sebring lxi from my parents(original owners). i was very excited it was a beautiful car with a nice stereo , sunroof and a sport transmission. after 3 and a half years and many oil changed later i was returning home one night from picking up my son about 10 miles from home, when the temp gauge started to rise above halfway, then shot up to red. i pulled the car over open the hood and nothing seemed wrong. the next morning i had it towed to my mechanic he looked it over, ran some tests, and explained to me that the motor was a loss.... a blown headgasket and thrown rod. i hear this is a very common thing with the 2.7l motors. Chrysler is well aware of the defect and claim it to be caused by lack of care for the motor, well f that s, i change my oil religiously.......

I bought a Chrysler Sebring from a used dealership because I wanted a car that would be reliable and I figured I would have a warranty if anything. Well, this car has been nothing but problems not too long after I got it, first the tires were recalled and then things here and there would happen, just recently I had it looked at just to make sure everything was ok and I spent about $700 on it for little things here and there, about a month after that my car just stopped in the middle of a busy road and I got it towed and they said it was the alternator which cost me about $500, so about $1,200 within a month on this stupid car. Then not even a month later it started smoking so we thought it was over heating, checked the anti freeze and the oil and the anti freeze was low so we added anti freeze to it, which seemed to have worked and that lasted two days, then it looked like it started over heating AGAIN so we added anti freeze to it again, my plan had been since Monday to bring it in on my day off which was the next day. However, the car started smoking A LOT and then wouldn't start after I turned it off. I was told that oil was all over the engine and the engine was done. What makes me even more mad is that I just sent in payments for this thing so that it would be paid up to December. I will NEVER buy a Chrysler again, I have never had a problem with a non American car as much as I have had with American cars.

Total Engine Failure - Repair shop found sludge in oil. This car was impeccably maintained with always on time oil changes as frequently as just a month before this incident. Engine was out of warranty and had to replace just to get anything back out of car. After finding this out we see this is a common problem with this make and model. Very disappointed in Chrysler for not seeing this and helping out.

We bought this car with 25,000 miles on it. We had taken care of it, maybe not oil changes to the exact mile, but close. One day it started knocking. Sure enough it needed a new engine. Chrysler wanted all receipts and documents of oil changes. They stated there was sludge build up. We did come up with quite a few receipts, but not enough, my husband would change it in our driveway. We went round and round with Chrysler, for god sakes it only had 73,000 miles on it, how could it need a new engine? Finally we got it covered. Since then (now the car has 89,000 miles) it has a new transmission, replaced the ti rod 3 times, and now has had a fuel pump for $700 replaced!!! Needless to say the tires are a special order and cost about $140 each...If it wasn't paid off, it would be long gone...

I loved my 2001 Sebring LXI until 3 weeks ago, when all of a sudden the engine started knocking, shutting down and the oil light would go on even though there was oil. Took it to my Chrysler dealer and the first thing the said was are you sure there is oil in it. Felt like asking them if I had "Stupid Woman" across my forehead. Then the proceeded to tell me that I would most likely need a new engine and it would cost up to $9000 including misc parts and labor. I'm waiting to hear if my extended warranty will be honored. The dealer is trying to make it sound like it is my fault that it is a crappy engine. I'm appalled at the number of complaints that have been noted on this once wonderful car and the callousness of Chrysler.

I have a 2001 Sebring convertible with the 2.7 v6. it started knocking suddenly with no warning. we did regular oil changes since my son is a mechanic, and didn't even use the car that much. bought it in 04 and put 26,000 miles on it in 3 years. the car had been sitting in a snow bank for 5 weeks before the weather broke and we got it out..8 miles from the house it starts to knock. had it towed home and have spent 2 weeks looking for a replacement engine, but with all the trouble that Chrysler has had with this motor why put in a problem waiting to happen...what I need is someone to tell me which (if any) good Chrysler engines will fit this car with the least trouble..even a 4 cyl. would be better than not driving the car.. no more Chrysler's,even though the engine was made by Mitsubishi(i think) Chrysler should still stand behind it and fix the problems they have created..we spent 11,000 for this car and now it is unsellable, anyone thinking of buying a Chrysler better think twice, and then not do it anyway. I may have to start looking at Toyota's, at least that is what my son the mechanic tells me.

Sebring LXI 2.7L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 105,750 miles

Bought 2001 Sebring LXi Convertible with about 80,000 miles on it less than 2 yrs ago for $9700. Good buy, average retail at time was about $11,000 and car was apparently in good shape. Chrysler touted how it had improved its quality, and the car seemed to have been well maintained, had clean oil before the dealer did anything to it, and ran/drove like new. I expected to continue good maintenance and have the engine last another 70-80,000 miles before major repairs were needed. I chose a 6 cylinder rather than a 4 cyl car expecting it to last but still be relatively economical and maintain value, as long as I took care of it. I have taken care of the car (regular maintenance/ oil changes / tires / brakes / etc) but got less than 26,000 miles out of it (now has 105,700) before the pan gasket developed a leak, it started to make a rattling noise on cold startup, and the chk engine light came on. I put in new plugs, new K&N air filter, pcv, cleaned injection system, flushed the engine and pulled the pan to replace the gasket. At that point I discovered a tremendous amount of oil sludge buildup, so I scraped and cleaned the oil pan and bearing girdle and figured the previous owner must not have done oil changes like they should have been. I put everything back together, hoping my cleanup and maintenance work should fix the problems. However, immediately the chk engine light is back on intermittently, the rattle/tapping is getting worse and the only sure fix is to rebuild/replace the engine. When I started shopping for an engine I discovered that all the aftermarket people know about the defects in this engine, and Chrysler has been told about the defects causing the oil sludge buildup problem in the 2.7 for years. If you rebuild the engine you just end up with the same defective engine so you have to replace it. The cost to have the engine replaced with a rebuilt is about $4000. Some aftermarket people are recommending replacing it with the 3.5 engine, while others claim their rebuilt 2.7s have been updated and corrected the defects. Chrysler has done updates to the 2.7 starting in 2002 but they have refused to warn consumers and honor warranties on the 2.7 engine. If I had known about the defects I would not have bought that car unless I had budgeted $4000+ to replace the engine. Now I am not sure spending $4000+ would be worthwhile since I am not sure the defects have been corrected in rebuilt engines. I certainly don't think buying a used engine that would still have the same defects is a good idea. Not sure what I am going to do. In 2 years, in spite of having done all the maintenance and taking care of the car so it would have a value of $5-7,000 I have a car worth $1-3,000. That is an unexpected cost of $4-6000. The bottom line total cost as of now is that I have spent about $14,000 instead of $9,500 to drive a car less than 26,000 miles (about 52 cents a mile instead of 32-37). Engineering flaws/mistakes happen but Chrysler has not taken responsibility and stood behind their product, they have just passed the costs on to their customers.

Sebring Coupe 2.7L V6

  • 106,000 miles

Just finished paying off my 2001 Chrysler Sebring that I've been walking past for more than a year now on my way to work. If I only knew when I was car shopping what I know now....

The car had plenty of oil in it when it broke down, but it now needs a new engine due to "Lack of oil" says the dealership. Freakin thing clogged up with sludge in spite of the regular scheduled maintenance. I just found this site while I was looking for a new motor to put in it so I might sell it and recoup some of my losses.

Other that the fact that the 2.7l V6 motor they use has a habit for taking a dump on it's owners, it was a great car! Awesome ride, very comfortable, and extremely good looking. I loved that car, but the love affair is over. I got soaked by this POS, and I'm not very happy about it.

It's grossly apparent that this is a design flaw on the part of Dodge/Chrysler. I'm not asking for a free replacement (it did have over 100,000k on it) but I think $4,000+ is a little steep for something that I had little or nothing to do with.

Sebring Limited 2.7L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 51,000 miles

At 51,000 miles, without any of the normal fault indicators, such as lights or gauges, coming into play, the Chrysler 2.7L engine in my 2001 Sebring spontaneously failed. After having the top end replaced at a cost of over $3500, I learned that the lower end had also been irreparably damaged and I am now advised that the entire engine must be replaced at an additional cost of $5,718 + tax and supplies.

The cause of this problem is engine oil sludge due to a manufacturers defect. Not only is this a $9,300 + tax and supplies repair but its occurrence was so dangerous I am considering a law suit well in excess of the repair cost. This is a commonplace mechanical failure on this engine type and everytime it happens there is the potential for loss of life or serious injury. There is no warning that the engine is going to fail. It just happens spontaneously and it could be a at 70mph! This is an impending deadly event.

I now have a car which is worth zero and for which I not only have an outstanding loan balance, but I have already invested $3500+ in addressing this repair with thousands more to come.

Chrysler must be held accountable.

Sebring LX 2.7L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 65,000 miles

Purchased a 2001 Sebring with 2.7L engine last year with 43000 miles on it. I took the car in for oil changes every 3000 miles as stated in owners manual. In March 2007 I went to start the car and only the head lights would come on, I was told that it had blown the fuse #20(start/ignition fuse). I had that fuse replaced twice before having to have the vehicle towed to a independent mechanic who told me I needed a new starter. Paid $530 for that, the car sounded great and drove perfectly UNTIL approximately 30 days later I took the car and the regularly scheduled oil change, I also had a tune up(which I believe the manual was needed due to mileage), and brakes. Two weeks later, I was out on a Saturday running errands and I went to start the car, it sounded like a Harley Davidson, I was in disbelief so I turned the car off and restarted it, didn't so much hear anything and figured it would be ok to drive back home(2-3miles)from where I was. During this drive the car gave no indication of overheating, nor did the engine or oil light come home. Once I was home and the car was parked I decided to start it again, at that point all the panel lights that normally illuminate and turn off did EXCEPT the engine light. By this time, it was too late in the day to get the car into any shop for a diagnostic. The following Monday I had the car towed to the same indep mechanic I used when the starter went out. He called me later in the day and told me that I blew two heads so I needed a new gasket, he told me that the cost would be $1400. I said ok, fix my car. On Tuesday he called me at work telling me that one of the blocks in the engine was cracked, that the car overheated and that it was my fault. When I told him that the car gave me no indication that it overheated, he insisted that a connector must have been broken and that was why it didnt register that it was overheating. He asked me to come into his shop so that he could show me where the engine was cracked. Now mind you, I'm by far no mechanic and when I went to his shop he of course had taken what appeared to me as everything under the hood apart and told me that he could fix my car for $3600 (installing a rebuilt engine). That is about $1500 shy of what I owe on this car. I told him no thank you, asked that since he had done no repairs and had told me initially that I only needed a new head gasket to put everything back so that the finance company can have their car. He then told me that he would but it would cost me the same as if I were getting the gaskets replaced. The owner of the shop where my car is said he would work with me if I gave him $2000 he would fix my car and allow me to payoff the $1400 in labor cost in two payments over the next couple of months. Needless to say, I gave him the 2k and I am heartbroken. I have owned Chrysler and Dodge in the past and never had problems, but this experience has made me callus and I WILL NEVER WANT ANOTHER CHRYSLER.

One night, after work, my car overheats. It was bellowing white smoke. I pulled over and opened the hood. There was oil and anti-freeze every where. I checked the oil and it was black. I couldn't believe it because I change my fluids regularly. I got a few diff. quotes on this car. All of them ranging from $3,000 to $5,500. The story was pretty much the same all around. I needed a new engine. There was anti freeze in my oil. And because these engines are made out of aluminum they aren't very tolerant to heat. I still owe $3,500 to the people who financed me on this POS car. This is interfering with my school and work. I hope I can bounce back from this.

I was on the Interstate when out of nowhere my car quits. I coasted as far as I could, then parked the car on the shoulder of an offramp. The engine would not start. I had to get it towed to the next small town where the mechanic informed me that the engine was a gonner. I then had to get it towed 80 miles to my mechanic. He confirmed the diagnosis. Now I find out that this is a recurring problem with the Chrysler Sebring 2.7l engine. The best used engine is in Washington state at a cost of $2500, add on shipping and installation I am looking at $4000 to replace it with another potentially bad engine. Why doesn't Chrysler admit to the design problem and fix it! Maybe a class action suit is what is needed. I will never buy or recommend a Chrysler. My Sebring died today literally 6 seconds from home. I just sank a bunch of cash into it to which makes this really great. Around last june i noticed a rattling that kind of made the car sound like a desil semi. Trouble was it would happen during initial starting and kick out and go back to normal after 5 - 10 min. So naturally no professional ever heard this rattle as by the time I got it into a shop it seemed fine!!! Even better, in the last couple of months a new problem cropped up you might be familiar with the flickering low oil pressure gauge at idol? Thats just the beginning. It gradually required higher RPM to make it fade away and eventually always on. Well $200.00 replaces the oil sensor but don't expect that to fix the problem you just get to start the process all over again!!! TWO DAYS ago I had it in again for a cam shaft sensor another $200.00 and the mechanic warns me not to invest too much more into this POS because the rattling and the low oil pressure are probably a sign that the engine is going. "It could be two months it could be two years but it's gonna go." How about Two days. Engine Failure!!!!!!! To any one willing to give it a try, I wish I did if only for feeling proactive is you can purchase a Pure One Purelite Oil Filter which will add 5lbs of pressure to the system and run a thicker oil. This advice I received from Chrysler's HEAD MECHANIC! A busy man im guessing. He said that the rattling was because low oil pressure was not pushing it up into the (technical mumbo jumbo) im no pro. For the record I did not do this. It's winter here! and this fancy oil filter is not sold any where i Know short of ordering online. The best part is I was planning to figure it out tomorrow on my only day off in two weeks! MY WIFE'S FORD HAS TWICE THE MILES MY SEBRING DOES AND AT LEAST IT STILL RUNS!!!! A FORD!!!!
