I bought this car brand new! Always kept it perfectly maintained. Driving home out of the city accelerating onto the highway - my engine shuts down!!! Thankfully I had 3 other people with me to help guide us to the breakdown lane at a coasting 20 mph speed with cars flying past us on both sides. Car almost killed us!!! Have it towed, taxi home. Chrysler tells me it's one of 3 problems: Timing Chain, Water Pump or Blown Engine but it'll cost me $700 just to FIND the problem. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??!!! Of course my warranty ran out. Needless to say I prefer a new car than to dump another defective engine that'll cost me thousands of dollars into this load. The Chrysler service guy told me I was making the right decision not to have it fixed...I started having problems with that car 6 mos after buying it and all I ever got from Chrysler was 'normal wear n tear' response. A normal engine that is properly maintained does not blow at 83,000 miles.

The engine created a rattling noise in the middle of the Highway, with no sign of anything wrong on the dash-board, with a oil up to the allowed limit and stopped. Tried to restart the engine and it did but with a big rattling noise. We stopped and parked it on to the shoulder. We called CAA for assistance and the emergency technician first thought that we did not have oil in the engine. He did check and found that the engine and the required amount of oil, because we had changed the oil just a month ago. He was a little puzzled and he knew that the engine had gone, but not sure why. We took it to a garage and could not verify why this happened but told us the connecting bearing rode had broke and the engine is gone. Not sure what to do at this point. I called a service person at Chrysler and told me she never heard of such a problem and told me that Chrysler is not in any position to help me. I am really puzzled and I am planning to make a complaint to the Chrysler Canada. I hope they would listen. It looks like I am not the only person who had this problem. Is there a way you could provide with some previous experiences that could help my case?

AFTER HAVING OIL CHANGED STARTED TO HEAR AN UNUSUAL KNOCK. TOOK TO LOCAL MECHANIC AND HE IMMEDIATELY KNEW WHAT WAS WRONG. OIL SLUDGE BUILDUP AND THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. DROVE CAR BRIEFLY 1 DAY AND CAR STALLED AND WOULD NOT RUN. WAS ABLE TO FIND AN ARBITRATOR THAT IS HANDLING THESE COMPLAINTS BUT INFORMATION NEEDED I DID NOT HAVE SINCE THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY I DISCARDED. LOOKED FOR USED ENGINES BUT HARD TO COME BY. WOUND UP GETTING A REMANUFACTURED INSTALLED AT GARAGE IN CHICAGO. I HAVE BOUGHT CHRYSLERS BEFORE BUT WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER CHRYSLER BRAND AGAIN. THETRE IS NO SUPPORT OUT THERE ANY MORE FROM A REGIONAL COMPLAINT CENTER. ALL CALLS HAVE TO GO TO DENVER AND THEY NEVER CALL YOU BACK OR ALL AUTOMATED ! HOPE CHRYSLER GOES BANKRUPT !!!

We purchased this car from a Chrysler dealer in Feb 2006. It had extensive maintenance records from the car rental agency that had owned it since new. In Aug 2006 the engine overheated and began a loud knocking sound. My mechanic dropped the oil pan and determined that the #2 rod bearing had disintegrated in the engine. SO,engine failure despite proper maintenance

The dealer we bought the car from assumed no responsibility and Chrysler said the car was simply out of warranty. I eventually purchased a re manufactured engine and had my mechanic install it.

This is a defect in the design that should be covered by Chrysler.

I bought a used car at Stokes Toyota here in town. I've had the car approximately 10 months and started to hear a knocking noise in the engine. I took it in for an oil change and was told that the knocking noise was coming from behind the timing compartment. I had a family friend (who is a mechanic) look at it and he told me that it was the hydraulic (spelling??) tensioner. Three weeks later, the knocking has stopped, but the sludge was so thick in the car that it took that long to soak all the parts and get the sludge out. Then to find out on the computer that it will happen all over again, and soon!

My son was driving my 2001 Chrysler Sebring LXi one day and said he heard this knocking noise. He stopped the car and waited a few minutes. After waiting a few minutes he turned the car back on and it would not start. Had it towed to Chrysler dealer and they called within a week stating oil sludge built up on engine due lack of maintenance. I was very infuriated, because I got regular oil changes to car. They call extended warranty and they refused to cover, because I couldn't produce all the maintenance receipts. They probably wouldn't have paid for it if I had all the receipts. Now the car is a lawn ornament. I decided to purchase an Acura TL and have never been happier. Will never buy another Chr$yler product or car. I hate that I paid the car off and didn't last a year after car was paid in full. It was for my son to use for college transportation and now have to buy another car for him, but it won't be a chr$yler.

No major problems to date since the purchase in 2001 and car is running great. Minor issues such as rear defrost wires constantly detach and told can't reattach, etc..

Suddenly the car stalls at a turn signal. Put car in park and restart - nothing unusual but 1st time can note car stalling. Car runs great for another day and then on the morning commute, car begins to stall. I pull over and notice a horrible smell - open hood and oil all over engine and hood of car. Have car towed to place of purchase - Medved and told "bad news" - the entire engine has to be replaced at a cost of $9000 total but a guarantee of at least 3 years. After asking what I could have done to prevent this at Medved, I was told there was nothing I could have done and this just happens but take all the time I need to decide to have it fixed. To make matters worse I was then charged $110 for them to open the hood and determine this.

In all of my years of owning Toyota truck (~200,000 miles) and a Honda Accord (145,000), I had never had engine problems and such a horrible dealer experience. Not only do I think Chrysler should be shut down for selling this engine in this car but Medved should be equally ashamed for quoting almost double for the replacement cost compared to research done online for this issue.

OMG!!! I was driving on the highway and the car felt like it was coasting/running weird. I got off the highway and drove on the streets. I noticed white fume coming from the exhaust pipe in the back. I finally arrived at my destination and parked the car. I left for lunch and all of a sudden the car started coasting again then the oil light starting blurring! I decided to turn off from the main street, the steering wheel starts to lock up, it's hard to turn the wheel then the car just cuts off! I have the car towed and they inspect under the hood. OIL HAS COVERED MY ENGINE! They say that it COULD be a head gasket blown however, this car has TWO HEAD GASKETS!!! Then I'm told the engine blew. Something about oil sludge??? WTH!!! I changed my oil every 3,000 miles and I just had a tune up on June 4th not to mention that my car ran hot on June 29th and I had to replace the upper coolant pump. I'm PISSED. I am financing this car!!! The amount of money to get another engine is CRAZY and every mechanic has admitted that the 2.7 Engine is TRASH! I'm stuck with this car...which I really liked. Hopefully with enough complaints there will be a lawsuit and we all can be compensated.

One Saturday I was running around town, topless as usual, temperature gauge went up, I put my heater on; pulled over, let it cool, put water in it; went home. Had the oil changed, they said oil was sludge; said I had a blown a head gasket. So I took it to my mechanics; they rain tests; everything passed, no blown head gasket, they said if there is a problem it's internal. I drove it the next day, temperature gauge never went up but I saw steam coming from hood, let it cool down. Checked later, coolant in the oil. I need a new engine; I'm screwed; I'm a single mom and have to watch my money; luckily my grandmother is letting me use her 89 Oldsmobile right now. Needless to say "I feel old in the Oldsmobile; my topless days are over". I'll never by a Chrysler again. If I could afford another convertible, I'd get a Toyota.

I took my Sebring to an authorized Chrysler dealer as the engine was making some clicking sounds and after looking at the owners manual I saw that at 91,000 you were supposed to get the timing chain replaced. I parked the car at my house and a couple of weeks later had it towed to the dealer. The dealer first said they had to replace the starter as it was shot (news to me). Then they said that as they were replacing the timing chain, it probably made sense to replace the water pump, OK. Then they replaced the timing chain. The dealer called and said it was done. I picked the car up at 4:12 pm and at 5:49 pm the same day (almost and hour and a half later) the engine froze up. The dealer indicated there was sludge in the engine but never told me that the engine might fail! The cost of repairs: $1,868.60 The current value of the car: $0

Was going down the road minding my own business and then a loud noise happened when I braked to stop. Then it happened. NOTHING!! The car died! In the middle of the road! It would not turn over at all! The mechanic told me he thought the timing chain and went, he said he tried to turn the motor manually and he couldn't get it to turn at all! The engine had locked up also! Now he tells me I have to have a new engine which will run me around $4,000! I still owe money on the vehicle, no engine, and a good payment left! What to do? I do not know where to turn with this one! Please advise and help!

For those of you having 2.7L engine failures. Contact ISG Impartial Services Group 1-(866)332-3746 for a settlement with Chrysler. They are a mediator/ go between that will make an offer to settle out of court. Don't accept first offer. Don't expect much, and they will want you to sign off on any further possible lawsuits. A class action lawsuit is not in the near future from what I have read. The 2.7l engine was manufactured by Mitsubishi for Chrysler and has an internal water pump (bad seals) that I believe allows coolant to mix with the oil causing the sludging problems. There are other possible causes out there from experts blaming oil change frequency etc. For whatever reason the engine replacement cost can be expensive. A used engine will not solve the problem either. Try to find a quality rebuilt engine like one from Promar, Rhino etc. They have accomplished modifications to improve some reliability issues. My sebring was in very good condition, we loved the way it drove. It is black with chrome wheels leather int. cd player. It got over 30 miles per gallon on our trips to see our grandkids. They are in Indiana and North Carolina. The first time the car quit I had it towed to a repair shop. They replaced the cam senser, over two hundred dollars. We drove it home, the next day on her way to work, it quit on my wife again. This time it through a rod. I got many estimates for repair and just can't afford it. Its too nice a car to junk, so it sits in our yard. With all the bad reports I hear on the 2.7, I'm afraid to put a used motor in it... HELP !!!!!

My 2001 Chrysler Sebring suddenly died on the side of the road Sept. 14, 2007. I had it towed to a repair shop and was informed that the engine had seized and would cost $4,000 to repair. I was also told that this particular engine (2.7L) has many problems with sludge build up, even with regular oil change and maintenance. I live alone and have many health problems. This was my only means of transportation and I have a limited income. I can not afford a $4,000 repair. It is Chrysler's crappy engine and they should have to foot the bill. I have taken excellent care of this car and am very upset to be left stranded. I am now having to look at $1200 to $1500 used cars and we all know what you will find for that amount of money. More headaches.
