Started having serious problems during the winter including not gearing at all for the first minute after selecting a gear. Sometimes reverse would work but try putting it into drive and the engine would rev itself but gears wouldn't engage. It will engage after a minute with a clunk which I learned to avoid by sticking it in neutral and waiting. Down shifting was getting really bad just before it was replaced. Third to second you could hear/feel a loud clunk in the tranny. All other gears would be sticky and jerky. Stopping completely seemed to just about stall the car and the tranny would disengage sometimes. I thought there might be a problem with the TC but it's fine now that tranny's fixed.
Took it to a chain mechanic who wanted to rebuild the tranny for $1200-2500. I guessed they'd charge me $2500 so I went to a guy who knows a friend who replaced the tranny for $1200. $600 for parts (including filter/flush and a year warranty) and $600 labor.
