i'm a young lady with pretty much no knowledge of vehicle repair so pardon my lack of proper terms.....

this one head light problem cost me a $100 fine with 3 days to fix it (not a nice cop to say the the least) after reading about this problem on the internet and seeing the average hefty price tag of repair.....I spent the entire winter not driving past daylight in fear of the $600 ticket she promised me if it wasn't fixed and i was pulled over again.

well it's summer now and i just fixed it with some tinfoil, needle nose pliers and a screw driver. i haven't seen this easy fix ANYWHERE on the internet so i decided to post it. i know i would have liked to find this solution back in dec. so here it is....

disconnect battery ,not sure if you really have to, but the box said to so i did.

the fuse box thing not sure if that's what it's called. it has a plastic cover (that says to disconnect battery before messing with it) it's under the hood to the very right can't miss it. take the plastic cover off.

on the front of that is a smaller silver 5"x1"x4" little box ( I'm just guessing dimensions). unscrew screws and pull that little box off.

on the back of the little box you will see a bunch of little tabs (not the pins above just the tabs on the bottom) that fit into the fusebox thing.

bend all the tabs DOWNWARD a little with the needle nose pliers

stuff a little piece of tinfoil into all the holes in the fusebox that the tabs fit into. i used a tiny flat head screw driver.

screw the little box back onto the fuse box, put the plastic cover back on

reconnect the battery and check if it worked!

if not you could try re bending and more tinfoil? don't know i'm no mechanic obviously but it worked for me the first time and i wanted to share

Here is my temporary fix for now, the park lamps relay and horn fuse had to be pulled to stop the lights from flashing and the horn from sounding, what I did just to have lights going for now I added the relay in my earlier complaint, this assures the headlights come on when the headlight sw is turned on, I pulled the wire off of the relay that energizes the relay, (feeds the coil in the relay), I added a new wire from that connection to the battery pos post with just a small alligator clip on the other end so I can hook it up to the battery when I need Head lights. To turn on marker and tail lights I took a 12inch piece of wire and added a crimp on terminal to one end that looks like a spade terminal, I trimmed the width of the spade terminal smaller with some cutters so that the spade terminal would plug into one of the slots were the relay was that I pulled. Where I pulled the relay there are three small slots that run along the bottom, the first slot on the left is were I plugged in this wire. Take the other end and attach it to the pos battery post and you will have tail lights and side marker lights.

I'm not worried about the horn right now so I left it alone.

I have tracked it down to a bad module behind the junction box to the left of the steering column underneath the dash and two covers have to be taken off to get to it. It is called the DRL/Emergency flasher module, it runs the Daytime running lamps and the emergency flashers. The only problem is I have tracked it down on the internet and the module costs $245.00 thats the cheapest one I have seen so far.

Update from Aug 1, 2009: I have added a relay and a 20amp inline fuse to the headlight circuit. I used a 12v relay and mounted it in the engine compartment. I fed 12v to the relay thru an inline fuse from the battery and fed the other side of the relay to both headlamps. I triggered the relay coil with the wire that use to feed the right side headlamp because thats the headlamp that would come on when the headlamp switch was turned on.

Update from Oct 20, 2009: Update 10-20-2009, I have since found out that I was partially wrong, it seems that the yr2000 models and earlier had a DRL/Flasher-module that plugged in to the junction box that I mentioned earlier. My van is a 2001 and they combined these functions all in the Body control module which mounts behind the juction box in the same area as mentioned earlier. I called a local Dealer and was quoted $545.00 for a replacement. I have noticed that the problem can be very random, it has gone away for days and then will start doing it again. The problem gets worse as time goes by, what happens is the head lights will all the sudden start flashing on and off repeatedly at this point I had to pull the head lamps/park lamps relay in the IPC box in engine compartment, to stop this problem, then after that I was driving along and the horn started sounding off and on repeatedly, I had to pull the horn fuse in the IPC box to stop this.

on April i notice this problem.

when i start the engine. only left side light is working. when i turn on the headlight, Right side is working. left side shut down.

i even brought brand new light... still same problem, i even took it to technician. he even restart the computer. still he could not able to fix the problem.

i plan to the take to dealer near my area. to fix the problem.

I just find this site when i searching for this headlight problem.. good site.
