The passenger side map light not working, so found how to remove cover to replace bulb. Bulb was not blown, but the housing was blackened and melted. Bought a replacement at a dealer and it wouldn't fit! tried in both driver's side and passenger's. parts guy there was surprised that it wouldn't fit, so filed the plastic for me so it would fit. It lit for just a second but wouldn't stay lit. He refunded me. I've been reading where this has happened to others. Is there a recall?

Instrument panel lighting in several years of Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan around 2006 have no provision for getting speedometer and tachometer lighting increased; this makes those instruments literally invisible in low light conditions as around sunrise and sunset. This condition is always present and is a very dangerous condition. I pointed this out to two Chrysler dealers, but got no help!

The contact owns a 2006 Chrysler Town & Country touring. The contact stated that the passenger map light stopped working. When he removed the bulb, the bulb was fine but the housing was burnt black and distorted. He inspected the other map light and the other housing was also burnt. He was unable to get the holder out of the holding due to heat warpage. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired by a mechanic. The contact called the manufacturer who advised him to take the vehicle to the dealer for diagnosis. The current and failure mileage was approximately 39,250. The failure mileage was approximately 39,100.

I own a 2006 Chrysler Town and country. I've had a lot of problems with it since I got it, but the problem today seems dangerous. My overhead reading light (part # PC579) burned out. When I went to replace it, I found that the plastic housing for the bulb had melted where the contact is and was burnt all around the bulb. I then checked the passengers side, and it was burnt and starting to melt too. Also, when the dealer tried to replace the bulb for me, the part didn't fit, and they said it had been 'updated' and that the old type wasn't available anymore. The mechanic then filed down the plastic to get it to fit in the socket. They also told me that the burning and melting of the bulb wasn't out of the ordinary; they said it happens all the time. Looking at it, it appears to be as design flaw that could potentially cause a fire. The bulb faces upward into a chrome dome that then reflects the light back to illuminate the car for viewing maps, reading, etc. It seems to be a pretty dangerous design that could cause problems again and makes me nervous.

The front right side dome light was out. When I went to replace the light bulb, I discovered the light socket had burned, charred and partially melted. They replaced the entire unit, that included both dome lights, under warranty of a Chrysler dealer. Approximately 3 months later the same thing happened again. Now the left side dome light is also burned, charred and partially melted. I fear this condition could start a vehicle fire!
