About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
The 2009 Chrysler Town and country has a design flaw in the defrost vent design. The front defrost vents are not properly angled to clear the lower portion of the window. During inclement weather the wipers can become frozen to the windshield and fail to properly work. The vents are angled so as the bottom 4 inches of the window has little to no air circulating on the window. This design also causes the window to fog in temperatures below 32 degrees and not clear properly. The vents also do not angle to the outer edges of the windows. This could result in visibility issues and injury or death could occur. This happens when parked and when driving. This has happened on numerous occasions. When I contacted Chrysler corporation they fail to say there is a flaw. The flaw is easily seen by a visual check just by looking at the angle of the vents on the dash board.

The contact owns a 2009 Chrysler Town and country. The contact stated the vehicle jerked and the windshield wipers functioned independently. All the warning indicators illuminated during the failure. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 14V373000 (electrical system); however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 74,000. Parts distribution disconnect.

We just purchased this vehicle in April 2015, used with 98200 miles. After only roughly 3000 miles the vehicle started messing up. The wipers would come on for no reason and the dash would light up like a christmas tree. All the dash lights including the airbags, brakes, engine, ect. My fear is that if in a crash the airbags, brakes, and other safety equipment may not function as intended. After this happened a second time I called my local Chrysler dealer and the service manager informed me of a recall on some models but mine wasn't included. How can Chrysler recall some but not all these vehicles with the same problem. This should be considered a major safety defect and all should be repaired.

The vehicle dash lights and gauges will all flash and start beeping while the wipers continuously go on and off with no control. This only happened while vehicle was in park and either the driver side door was open but recently started doing this while driving. We took the van in to the dealership on 6/27 for the ignition switch recall and now the vehicle constantly does this while driving. The dealer was not able to complete troubleshooting due to time restrictions. I have seen many people online complaining of this same issue and some saying their vehicle will even shut off from time to time while driving and I am wondering why is this not being recalled?

On 10/13/2014, highway driving, used turn signal to pass another vehicle, when returning to original lane and turning off turn signal, the turn signal started blinking the opposite way, thinking I had missed the neutral position tried again, started blinking the opposite way. This went on for at least 2 minutes then finally stopped. On 10/28/2014, started vehicle in driveway and all dash indicator lights came on along with windshield wipers, the radio display was blank like it was off, but there was sound (radio display has been ongoing issue since we purchased vehicle in 2012). Turned vehicle off and tried to restart with same issue. Turned off and let sit for several minutes and condition went away. Next incident was on 10/31/2014. Was idling in a parking spot and the windshield wipers turned on along with the security light in the dash. This stopped within 30 seconds. Then while driving about 15 minutes later about 25mph, all dash indicator lights came on along with windshield wipers and lights inside of the van. Pulled over to side of road and turned off vehicle for a few minutes and restarted with no issues.

While driving about 30mph in my neighborhood, all of a sudden, my van's horn started honking, the wind shield blades began wiping very quickly and water was spraying over the windshield. Also, the automatic locks were going up and down and the car lights and blinkers were flashing on and off uncontrollably. It was very scary! I stopped the car and shut off the engine, but everything continued. Luckily I was not far from home and was able to carefully drive it there. Once in the driveway, the only way to get the car to quit was to disconnect the battery. Waiting on repair report.
