Avenger

  • 140,000 miles
A few things have happened all pointing towards a failed/failing tipm module. The first thing we noticed was the car would stall while sitting still in rush hour/bumper to bumper traffic. Then in early 2014 the windshield wipers started turning off during snow/rain storms almost causing accidents a few times that we replaced the wipers, wiper switch and wiper motor and still have the issue randomly. Last week the horn started to randomly go off to the point that I was driving to work today and it went off and did not stop. Saw the NHTSA investigation into Chrysler tipm's so wanted to put something in because I do not see the 2008 Avenger in the lists online and this is more than likely a failing/failed. Tipm. Dealerships want $800-1000 for the replacement, rockauto, com has it for $260 ($200 core charge) $460 total to get the replacement part then return the core. I have a friend with 2006 Dodge 3500 diesel that he had to replace his tipm recently and got one from rockauto.com as well and recommended them as the go to place given Chrysler's inability to take responsibility to notify their car owners of the potential risk/hazard. I am the original owner of my Avenger and bought it new October 2007.

Avenger

My 2008 Dodge Avenger first exhibited this problem in March 2011. I am the only owner and I bought it new. Especially in wet weather but occasionally in other instances, the engine will shut off but all electrical equipment- the radio, lights, dashboard and A/C will remain on. This occurs when braking at a stop light or slowing to make a turn- usually when at low speed as when pulling into a driveway. I then must put the car in park, turn off the ignition then restart the car and it always restarts immediately. I have talked to the dealership I bought the car at more than once about the issue but they say they cannot recreate the problem and so can't diagnose it, but this issue only occurs periodically in wet conditions so being able to recreate it at the dealership is unlikely. I would estimate it has happened around 15 to 20 times in the past 4 years. I have seen recalls for other Dodge and Chrysler vehicles that sound similar but none for the Avenger. I hope Dodge will issue a recall on this malfunction as it sounds like there are many other people with the same problem. I feel like this could easily cause an accident.

I took my car in on January 21, 2015 because my airbag light was flashing again but this time it's a clockspring and [xxx] at Dodge told me that is not safe to drive the car like this because airbags wont work, my cruise control doesn't work and he said more things will fail. I think this should be on the recall list but it isn't. there is no way that I can have it fixed because I get $800 a month and to replace that part is $579.30. Is there anyway to put this part on the recall list because it's not safe to drive. Thank you

Air bag light comes on and stays on when moving seat up or back which makes the sensor come on, have to keep moving the track until it turns off. Is this related to recall G14? fan in radiator constantly turns off and on, and now my car seems to have a electrical short that makes a knocking noise in the engine compartment when the air/heater is turned off, also the left side of car defroster does not work. Most recent the left driver seat belt all of a sudden is not retracting, this is not safe in the case of an accident, dealer is charging an outrageous price to have it fixed.

Stopped at a red light and a symbol on my dashboard appeared. The symbol was a lightening bolt in parenthesis which I've found out is the etc symbol. That along with my engine light came on together. After turning the car off the etc symbol did not reappear but the check engine symbol did. From looking through forums I've seen that this is a problem with numerous Dodge Avengers and to fix these problems cost large sums with no real conclusion of the reason for the symbols appearing in the first place. I would like to request that this problem be noted in the Avenger line and recalled. Thank you for your time and consideration.
