Alternator failure. The power saving mode light came on the battery light illuminated on the evic screen. The car shut down completely while driving.

I drove my car to work on Monday and back home (approx 25 miles round trip) with just a message stating battery in saver mode, otherwise a normal drive home. About 3 hours later I was going to the store, I turned my car on and it immediately started making a loud humming noise. I started to leave the driveway, got about 50 feet down the street when I noticed smoke was coming out from under the hood (it had a strong electrical burning smell). The ABS warning light and traction control warning light came on, the message with battery in saver mode appeared on the screen again, and the interior lights flickered. I got the car back in the driveway and left it there over night. The next day I started the car with the message, battery in saver mode being the only issue. I got to work, then called the dealership to have the car dropped off for them to diagnose. The dealership has diagnosed the problem as being an alternator failure. I researched recalls with similar malfunctions and P60 kept coming up. Apparently my Charger is not included in this recall even though the same issues occurred.

The contact owned a 2012 Dodge Charger. While driving in inclement weather (extensive fog), the contact reached down to pick up an item, and the vehicle veered southbound into northbound traffic. A crash occurred. The driver's side air bag and front passenger air bag deployed with force. The contact received lacerations to the face and eyes, fractures to both wrists, and injuries to the back and spine. Medical attention was required. The child passenger sustained minor injuries that did not require medical treatment. The contact was uncertain if the failure was related to NHTSA campaign numbers: 14V634000 (electrical system), 15V467000 (air bags), 16V352000 (air bags), and 16V043000 (structure). The vehicle was destroyed and towed. A police report was filed. The dealer and manufacturer were not notified. The failure mileage was not available. Parts distribution disconnect.

The contact was informed that the alternator failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 17V435000 (electrical system). The manufacturer was contacted and confirmed that the VIN was not included. The approximate failure mileage was 49,439.

I was driving my 2012 Charger SXT, and the car suddenly went into battery saver mode. I had pulled over to google it on my phone, and my car was starting to display the symptoms in the P60 recall. The battery light came on, the traction control, ABS, check engine lights, they all came on. Then as I was pulling into a parking space at Dodge the center screen shut off, I lost power steering, the car shut itself off. Somehow the windshield wipers ran a few cycles. The dealership informed me that my car had a 180 amps alternator, that it was not part of the P60. My car had just reached 119000km (74000mi), and the average mileage of Chargers with 180 amps alternators appears to be around 106000km (66000mi). The road that I was on, it followed the a winding cliff. If the problem had been more severe I would certainly have died, either gone into the rock face, off the cliff, or into oncoming traffic. The replacement alternator was over $800 cnd, that's before the inspection, before labor, and if the battery fried in this ordeal, it doesn't include that either. It doesn't cover the rental car I had to get. Obviously, Chrysler-Dodge-Fiat had to do a massive recall with one alternator, is it really a stretch to think that the other alternator that they installed in other vehicles were defective as well" I looked up the cost of a replacement online according to official Dodge specifications for the Chrysler 300 / Charger - they're listed at about $200-250 cnd, why is the one Dodge selling me over $800? is it because they realized they have to put in something of much higher quality and output so that this doesn't happen again" there had better be a recall about this - people will get severely hurt because of this.

This is related to P60 recall. Our car has the same alternator as the 3.6 cars in the recall. It had the very same problems: Wife driving down the highway, the battery light came on there was a few chime sounds, then ABS and tc lights came on, then all the dash warning lights came on. The wife knows enough about cars that she had to immediately pull over and shut the car off. Then smoke came out from under the hood and a smell of electrical burning was evident. She had been on a highway doing 55 mph. The wife called me and I went down there. The forst thing that I noticed was there was not anything electric working on the car. And worst of all it was stuck in park and couldn't put it in neutral for towing. The tow truck guy tried to jump it but soon realized that everything was shorted out. He finally towed it to the dealership. I was able to see the burn marks and where the metal of the alternator had melted. Upon doing research online I found about this same problem with other challengers. And also found the P60 safety recall. The recall listed the same exact symptoms that we had but didn't cover 5.7 engine cars. The alternator was burnt(pictures attached) exactly the same as the 3.6 engine cars. There were a lot of posts of the 5.7 having same issue that my car had. Most of those were covered under the warranty. Our car was out of warranty. It cost us $988.50 for a new alternator, battery and labor. Since this same part was covered under P60 recall it looks like Chrysler is being deceptive about the issue. Please investigate and reply. My vehicle has the same issues regarding P60 / NHTSA 14V-634 recall. The alternator does not provide enough voltage to the vehicle and the entire system begins to fail. While driving on a street traveling around 30 mph I received no warning and my began to shut down. All of the lights began turning on and off, the wipers turned on, and then my car completely shut off. This caused me to nearly hit another vehicle and injure myself. This is a huge safety concern and someone could be hurt.

My complaint is for the alternator on my 2012 Dodge Charger with 160amp alternator. This weekend after only 49,000 miles the alternator failed. The car died on the freeway and the alternator had caught fire. Luckily we carry a fire extinguisher in the car or I'm afraid the engine would of caught on fire. Please warn other Charger drivers if they smell electrical burning get to a fire station.

I live in Texas so the chances of my airbags exploding due to heat and humidity are very high. There is also a recall on the car jack which is dangerous as well. Driving on Florida turnpike and several car indicator warning lights came on, stability control, battery and so many others that I cannot remember them. A high pitched noise was emitted, car started smoking from vents and smelled like an electrical fire. I was passing a turnpike stop and was able to unsafely cross several lanes of traffic to pull in to the stop. I made it into the parking lot just in time and the car cut out. Had to take to be towed to the closest mechanic and leave overnight because it was too hot to connect to computer to troubleshoot. The battery casing was melted. The alternator and the battery had to be replaced. I am very grateful that I was next to a turnpike stop when this happened or my car would have shut down in the middle of the highway and could have resulted in a serious accident.

The contact owns a 2012 Dodge Charger. While driving with the radio on, a message indicator flashed "audio off". the vehicle was parked, turned off, and restarted. Within less than five minutes, the radio shut off and a warning indicator flashed for battery safe mode. In addition, while on a major roadway, the vehicle stalled several times. The contact stated that various warning indicators flashed, the wipers activated, and the hazard lights illuminated. The manufacturer indicated that the vehicle was excluded from the manufacturer recall being 180 amps because the recall addressed the 160 amp alternator assemblies. The recall information and failure mileage were not available.

Low battery mode light came on while turning into my driveway, the car then abruptly stalled and smoke began poured out from under hood and I noticed a strong electrical burning smell. I opened the hood and smoke was coming from the alternator. A mechanic I know that lives close to me checked the charging system and found the battery and alternator were both bad and had to be replaced. I purchased a new alternator ($428.54.) and battery ($145.80) and with the help of my mechanic freind, replaced both items. I contacted Chrysler and they advised that my car is not included in the P60 recall because my alternator is 180 amps. They started a case file and are supposed to contact me to come and look at the car. This issue is exactly the same as the P60 recall except this alternator is a different size. The manufacturer is the same and Chrysler is not standing by their customers for installing faulty equipment on these cars.

The contact received a recall notification for NHTSA campaign numbers: 14V634000 (electrical system), 15V467000 (air bags, seat belts), 16V043000 (structure), and 16V352000 (air bags). The parts needed for the repairs were not available. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repairs. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000. Parts distribution disconnect.

While driving my car home from work on 5/15/2017, I smelled smoke and started to hear a squealing from the engine area. I thought it might be one of the pully bearings, but when I pulled over and opened the hood, I found smoke coming out of the alternator, right after that flames came out of it too. I ran into the closest store and asked for the fire extinguisher and put out the fire before it spread. I'm calling Chrysler about the P60 recall which covers the alternator being defective. 800-423-6343. Case # 31638569 they are sending someone out to take a look at the alternator.

Car began to stall while driving on the highway. Lights on dashboard began blinking on and off windshield wipers came on and battery saver mode started flashing. My car began to decrease in speed on it's on and became hard to steer. Finally getting it to coast to a safe area on the highway it shut down on it's on and my car began to shake and make noises. Had to get it towed to a shop where they were not able to get into my vehicle at all so I have to call a lock smith to get into the vehicle so that some work could be done. The first repair shop called and said that I had a major electrical issue and that I needed to take it to the dealership so I got it towed to the nearest Dodge dealership where I am currently being charge an outrageous amount for repairs because of the faulty alternator which also ended up frying my battery as well but the recall on alternators doesn't cover my car but is the same year make and model that issues are coming up in that do have the recall on it.

I was driving on the highway when the car sound like I had a flat tire. Got out there was no flat tires. Kept driving and the car shut off at the light. Started again and died on the street with no warning. Got the car towed to Dodge of pembroke pines Florida. They don't know what's wrong. First they said the PCM got messed I by the altanator then got a call saying that's not the problem. Never heard back from Dodge since Friday, it's Monday now. I could have died if the car cut off on me on the highway. I keep up with the service and the car died. They say the battery is good. While driving the wipers came on and threw me 10 different codes then turned off.

Started driving and noise continued with electrical burning smell. Drove back home, parked and stopped engine. Smoke coming from alternator. Thought it might catch fire.

Complete electrical power failure, causing loss of control of vehicle as each power related accessory shut down, including being able to steer the vehicle to safety. The Chrysler group currently has a recall campaign across all their family of cars with 160 amp alternators. My model has an 180 amp alternator that failed the same way for me and others on the internet as the 160 amp alternators, yet the 180 amp alternator is not included in the recall. It is a known problem with the dealers and known by the mechanics in the dealership that 180 amp alternators fail the same way as 160 amp alternators. I have tow truck receipts, alternator receipt, and battery receipt. After the alternator internally shorted and smelled of burnt wires and filled the engine compartment with smoke, it also took out the battery which I also had to replace. I have a receipt for the battery as well.

After parking the car into the garage I noticed an electrical burning smell. I checked everything in the garage including smelling the hood of the car. At the time I couldn't locate the source. Worrying about an electrical fire I checked in periodically. It wasn't until I drove the car again that I noticed the electrical burning smell with a whining noise. This year Charger was part of a recall to replace the 160amp alternator which this car didn't have. Based on an internet search some of these alternators have caught fire. This failure happens just outside the warranty period.
