When the truck is started the rear drum brakes have a tendency to lock upon first braking. ABS does not engage when this happens. Brake operation normal afterwards. Had an ase mechanic adjust drums problem returned four months later. Front rotors have warped twice. First time the rotors were replaced at approximately 2 years/25K mileage. Rotors were replaced again 2 years later/50K mileage. Rear drums are not adjusting properly.

I have a '2000 Dodge Dakota, quad cab 4X4 that has reoccuring break warpage problems. I drive about 12000 miles a year, mostly highway, and need to replace my rotors atleast every 18 months. Durring normal breaking durring wet or icy conditions there is excessive pulsing that leads to individual tires locking up and skidding and activation of the antilock breaking system. Ive replaced the rotors with dealer puchased parts and equivilant aftermarket parts and both warp within 1-1.5 year.

Rear brakes have been inoperable since the day we bought this vehicle, returned to dealer with complaint. They said it was "normal". returned later with further evidence to show them and they tested it, adjusted the brakes and said it was ok. Later I jacked the vehicle up with the wheels powered up and could not stop the wheels from turning. Took it back to dealer, showed them my test and they now proclaimed a problem. They replaced every component and still no brakes. They took it to a brake shop for second opinion, the owner claimed I was right. Chrysler sent a rep to look at it, claimed it was "normal" so Chrysler said they were done with it. So Dodge won't do any more either. In slick conditions like snow, the rear wheels keep turning after the vehicle stops. I have to shift to neutral to keep from being pushed into an intersection.

Consumer stated there is no braking action coming from the rear brakes, vehicle was taken into dealership where parts were replaced, however the problem still exists.. consumer stated when stopping on snow and ice the rear wheels continue to spin after the front wheels have stopped, no matter how hard the brakes are being applied, the dealer has replaced the booster, master cylinder, proportioning valve, ABS valve, rear brake hose wheel cylinder and brake shoes, consumer stated he still has no rear brakes.

When applied between 35 and 40 mph, the rear brakes will pulse causing the rear end of the truck to hop. The rear drums are warped but "hardly worn" according to the inspector at midas. The technician at midas told me that re-surfacing the drums wouldn't fix the pulsing & hopping problem. I first really noticed this problem at around 17K miles and it has been consistent and reoccurring ever since. I have tried to find recalls or tsb's from Dodge (DaimlerChrysler) regarding this problem but nothing has been issued that I could find. There are, however, many owners who are also experiencing this problem with similar Dodge Dakotas as is evident but the amount of complaints that I have seen posted on various sites on the internet.

Clutch system/flywheel failed due to excessive heat. Vehicle had not been used for towing or hauling, and had relatively low miles. Front brake rotors and rear brake drums were warped and had to be machined to specifications. No work was covered by manufacturers warranty or extended warranty.
