I'm not sure what the hell the deal is with the awful noise especially when I first start the car leaving work or home. Its so annoying and embarrassing but does anybody know what it is?

Grinding noise in steering wheel/column when turning going 5-10Mph (such as parking in lot) when weather is cold. Noise isn't there when temperature outside is warmer than 50 deg F.
