my name is bruce watson i own a piece of crap dodge durango 1999 first the oil pump went bad then the water pump now the transmission now the it wont stay idleing while in drive or reverse now the oil presssure guage is dropping to 0 psi occassionally what next and chrysler wont help fix anything knowing they have had these failures

We've had the truck for 2 years as of this past November (2006) it was 6 years old with 36,000 miles on it. Bought it from a reputable dealer. As of October it started shifting out of OD when I let off the gas. then would take forever to go back in. If I shut OD off I have no problems but go thru way more gas. It happens after the truck runs for approximatly 45 minutes. It is very annoying. I just may go plunk down the 80 bucks to have the whole tranny fluid sytem flushed. My mechanic said it was caused by the emergency brake hanging up.. they fixed that but no luck. Started up on my ride in.

I KNOW THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDS TO RUN COOL AND THE RADIATOR THAT COOLS THE TRANS ARE DEFECTIVE THEY RUST FROM THE INSIDE AND THE DIRT F*CKS UP THE SENSORS AND THE VALVE BODYS INSIDE THE TRANS I HAVE THE TRANS REBUILT AND THEY NEEDED TO CHANGE THE SENSORS FOUR TIMES BECAUSE THE DIRT KEPT ON CLOGGING UP THE SENSORS FINALLY THEY FLUSHED THE RADIATOR AND IT SEEMS TO BE GREAT..... NOW HOW LONG I DONT KNOW YET..

Have had pretty much all the same problems as everyone else. Am working on the overdrive kicking out problem now, replaced the speed sensor today and it seemed to help a little. At a cost of $25 it didn't hurt too much . My next step is to replace the TPS (throttle position sensor). I am luckier than most because I can work on vehicles if I have to. So far I have lost oil pressure due to a clogged pickup in the oil pan. I believe this was due to carbon flakes from the underside clogging up a pickup screen that was too close to the bottom of the oil pan. I have also replaced the upper ball joints, they had no lubrication and were close to coming apart. I am planning to replace the intake manifold gasket before my next long trip.

This is really aggravating. I think it is more or less the scary fact that if it is that you have got to replace your transmission it will more than likely run you more than 2 grand just to fix it. my father has a 2000 durango with the same mileage as mine and has never had a bit of trouble out of his. Is there anyone out there with a 2000 model having the same trouble or was it just the 99 models. any way grab life by the horns and let it take you for a ride. As for me I look at it like this I love my durango and am willing to fix it whatever the problems may be.

How do transmission get off the assembly line? Its hard to believe that there are only 4 durangos with transmissions problem. As a consumer I feel hosed.

My durango does the same thing. When cruising on the highway, it mysteriously shifts in and out of overdrive. I notice the RPM jumps accordingly when it does this. It seems to only happen when using cruise control however.

Shifts in & out of overdrive for no reason, rpm's would increase just sitting in park, driving down the highway you could feel it shift in and out of overdrive

Driving at a constant speed, on a level roadway, while in Overdrive, the transmission will suddenly and for no apparent reason, kick out of Overdrive. This is shown as a sudden increase of RPM, with no indication of Overdrive being disengaged (dash indicator does not come on). Then it will apparently shift back into Overdrive and out again, for several cycles, maybe up to 10? times over 5 or 10 minutes time. Then, will not occur again for a month's time period.. Dodge dealer cannot find anything wrong and essentially treats this problem as non-existent.
Has anyone experienced this phenomenon? And, does anyone have a solution?

The transmission in my 1999 Durango would shift in and out of overdrive while driving at a steady rate. Replaced the throttle position sensor and fixed the problem.
