Durango SLT 5.2L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 128,000 miles

Issues started in 2011 with the previous owner of the Durango. The transmission was rebuilt in November 2011. I bought the vehicle in January 2012 for the sole reason that it had a rebuilt transmission and ran great, I paid $3,300 for this vehicle. Then 6 months later transmission started acting up.

Fluid needed to be changed and we had a transmission flush done. The mechanic said the transmission fluid was dirty and did not look like it came from a rebuilt tranny that was less than a year old. We have the receipt from the shop that put the rebuilt transmission in so we called for confirmation that the receipt was correct. The transmission seemed to run better for a few months.

Then in January 2013 the transmission completely went out with no warning. Took it to a transmission shop and had another rebuilt trans put in March 2013 when I could afford the $2,000 dollars it cost. The mileage at this point was 149,000. Then 2 weeks after the rebuilt trans it had to go back in because of a transmission leak. That got fixed and it ran great for five months. Then in the end of August out of the blue it started slipping in and out of gear to the point that I thought it was going to leave me at the side of the road. Took it in and it had to be completely re-serviced and fixed again at 154,000 miles. 2 weeks ago the transmission started slightly slipping again. Now tonight at 158,000 miles ( 8 months after the last rebuilt transmission went in) the transmission completely went out again. Thank god it is covered by warranty but this is ridiculous!

It is a pain in the ass to have to put this much time and money in a used vehicle. I will never by a Dodge vehicle again. I have a 1995 Chevy Caprice that has 188,000 miles on it. I have owned it for five years and the most all together I put into it was 1000 dollars. The engine and trans are still running perfectly. Oh and the f*g rust spot on the bumper that every other Durango from the year 1999 has??? While I am bitching about the transmission, I might as well put that in there too!

Durango SLT 5.2L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 164,000 miles

I Bought this 99 durango 5.2L SLT Magnum used, I gave over 4,000.00 for it around 4 yrs ago & have had trouble out of it ever since. Oxygen Sensor-Replaced, All other problems are still a problem since I can't afford to fix it or drive it within 10 to 15 miles anymore because of differential ...Ball joints, Tires bowed out, Transmission grinding while driving & leaking fluid from the front seal, Front differential exploded on the main highway while in 4 wheel drive & I had to remove the small drive shaft to get it to drive without grinding, Fuel pump stops working until I tap the fuel tank with a tire wrench, Rear Wiper shorting out & had to unplug connection to it, Major rusting around the bottom of the rear gate, Rear gate will not open because of bad latch gears, Ash tray fell out, plastic latch to glove box is broken, Back brakes does not work at all they fell apart inside the hub, Major paint faded on complete hood & starting on the side of vehicle, Back seat electric window came lose from up & down attachment, Some kind of smoke comes out of the air conditioner ducts. This is ridiculous as to what the dodge manufacturer will put on people!!! I have tried to sell it and can't even do that without giving it away!.. I had this Durango serviced having all fluids (Differential, transmission fluid & filter, all front end greased) changed and kept the oil changed every 1500 miles....Since I live on a fixed income from being disabled I thought I bought something that would last and get me to my Dr or hospital every time I had to without breaking down with a cheaper vehicle, But I was VERY Wrong!!!!!!!.. S#@% on a Dodge!..,. I'll never buy another Dodge Durango or the like & I am advising all of my friends not to either, Since they all already have seen all of the problems I have with it... ALSO note, that it was pre-owned by a lady that took good care of it also. I have a junky, rusted 85 Ford van that I drive now, UGLY, But it gets me there without hardly any problems, Except the rust!!.. Drive Safely, Especially if you own a Durango!!...Paul

189,840 1999 Dodge Durango units sold

55 reported transmission problems here on Autobeef and it is called a big problem?

Really?

189,840 sold, 55 problems here?

They say only 10% of people w. an issue will voice it...so, maybe 550 people out of 189,840 sold are having the transmission problem?

Perspective is all.

Durango LL

  • Automatic transmission

Just paid $4600 CASH from a Used Car Dealership in Texarkana, AR. Drove it to the apartment complex I was residing in. Did NOT make it to the front door! Transmission WENT the smooth OUT! Had to put it in Neutral to push it BACK into a parking spot by the office. After walking home, calling and leaving a message for my returned PHONE CALL, he called me back. I DEMANDED either fix the piece of S** or I want my CASH BACK!!!! I got the Durango back! Had problems with SLOW shifting ever since!!! I swore to myself and my friends if this persisted....I WOULD DUMP THE PIECE OF S**.

I had to rely on cabs, fellow assocaites, and my significant other to get me to and from my 2 jobs!! I had decided then and there if this happened again, I'm DUMPING the PIECE OF SHITE! I had reached my limit.

Durango 5.9L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 68,000 miles

I have a 1999 Dodge Durango 5.9 V8. I purchased this vehicle in Nov. 2006 . I had it for 1 month and the Transmission went out at 68000 miles. This car is a piece, it looks really nice and it like brand new in the inside. In October of 2007 the ABS pump went out. I still have not fixed it to much of a hassle. When the dealer puts in the shop it stay's in there for 2 weeks or so. The strut broke in January 2008. Too many problems and it also only gets 12 mpg. Never buy

  • Automatic transmission

this was the second time trans failed it also failed in 2002 at 42000 miles but dodge replaced it and after the second time i was going to sell it as is but i found a trans place that would give me the trans at only $800 what a deal and they told me to replace a one way check valve in the trans line and flush the lines and that should do but what got me is that they said dodge is well aware of this problem i had to do all the work my self but it was well worth saving $3000 all this for that little check valve hope this helps
