My vehicle is old but I keep it up but I had this problem starting a year ago. I replaced heater fan as old drawing too many amps. Replaced pig tail at heater fan by cutting wire off plug and sodering and taping. Replaced Stat it plugs into. As the Stat gets old they work on and off and you lose low speed then the next speed and high last then gone all together, normal on most older vehicles. Cost of stat from Dodge $15.00 pig tail $25.00

But a few months later it started all over again and only High worked meaning new STAT is junk now. I pulled plug off stat all burned again. I found out if you follow wiring from Stat under dash there is another male/female plug like what plugs onto the heater Stat/blower. I found out it was all burned up like the other.

But no pig tail made for this it is a whole wiring harness at a cost of hundreds, So here is a $5.00 fix. Cut the wire right off at the plug on each wire next to plug. Buy some proper amp/gauge wire and solder the splice in, in place of male and female plugs and tape up with electrical tape.

Now replace the pig tail you can buy from NAPA that you splice in place of plug that goes to the Stat/heater fan. You must replace Stat. Your problems are over. Mine working great for months now in the winter. If you have an older unit replace the fan motor. This is because as they get old they draw more amps and when to much they will destroy all of what you replaced and you can start over again.

I think the wiring is flawed and this includes the plugs that burn up. A fuse should blow before this gets that bad my take. But I am not a tech just a old car buff.

Good luck and enjoy your AC and Heat again. :) Steve

Durango SXT 4.7L V8

The plug that goes to the resistor pack for the fan switch melted . Tested the resistor pack it tested good. I soldered the wires direct to the resistor pack.

Still could not get the fan control to work. Connected the fan directly to 12 VDC and works fine. I really don't want to take apart the dash board. Looks like the ground is switched through the resistor pack according to the wiring diagram. Seems like I lost the ground through the switch?

Any ideas?

Darn stupid heater/air conditioner never worked quite right to begin with but now, with Canadian winter approaching, the dumb thing won't even turn on all of a sudden. Started out with only being able to use on high...now nothing. Somebody please help me :( . We don't have the money to take it to the shop for quite a while. Anybody know how to fix? Send me instructions or something...any help would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise I love my Durango...I can actually fit all the kids in there and don't have to drive an ugly, cheap-ass, flimsy mini-van (sorry I REALLY HATE mini-vans).

P.S. Found out that Durango's can take quite a hit when an ex-cop slid through a stop sign and smashed into me. His poor, cheap-ass (but brand new) Toyota truck was totaled. That's what you get for buying foreign buddy.

The ac/defroster isn't working in the front however the rear ac/defroster works fine. The fuse is not blown and it is suspected the problem lies in something else more serious. The low hum of the ac/defroster unit can be heard but nothing activates. Can it be the condenser, plate and fin evaporator, or blocking valve? It's a 2001 dodge Durango 4.7L V8 W/Rear AC

THE AC/HEATER FAN DOESN'T WORK PROPERLY. IT ONLY WORKS ON HIGH WHICH REALLY ISN'T HIGH AT ALL. BUT IF YOU HAVE THE REAR HEAT ON THE FRONT HEAT BARELY BLOWS AT ALL. AND SOMETIMES WHEN YOU HAVE THE HEAT ON IN THE FRONT IT BLOWS COLD AIR IN THE BACK.!
