Durango

  • 69,000 miles
The contact owns a 2002 Dodge Durango. The vehicle would not respond when the contact attempted to shift into park. He had to shift into reverse in order to turn off the vehicle. He applied the emergency brake to keep the vehicle from rolling away. To start the vehicle, he had to shift into neutral and apply the emergency brake again to keep the vehicle from rolling away. He believed there may have been an issue with the transmission and took the vehicle to a local mechanic. They could not determine the cause of the failure; however, they stated that it was not due to the transmission. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign id number 07V555000 (power train:automatic transmission:lever and linkage:column shift). No repairs have been made. The current and failures mileages were less than 69,000.

My 2002 Durango has developed problem where gear shift lever is sticking in park at initial startup. Will free up after several minutes delay or if brake pedal is pumped 3-4 times. Will not repeat unless engine is off several hours. Regular daily occurrence past 4 weeks. Current mileage is 100,010 miles. At first thought shift linkage freezing in winter weather but now have had problem on days with extended hours of temps well above freezing. No dealer contact yet.

The contact owns a 2002 Dodge Durango. While driving 35 mph, the oil pump failed without warning. The oil pressure dropped and the motor locked. The dealer rebuilt the transmission, but the failure continued. The vehicle was taken to the dealer numerous times, but they could not duplicate the failure. The contact stated that there was oil leakage in cold weather. When the engine heated up, there was sludge because the leaker stopped the strainer. The purchase date was unknown. The current mileage was approximately 112,300 and failure mileage was 91,053.

On the first days of November, I stopped on a red light, when the light was green I started going. When the transmission reached the third gear, the engine revved up to 3000 + RPM. Took it to mechanic and used the scanner tool to found out that the transmission was slipping on the third and fourth gear. I was driving late night so not too many cars around. I had to replace the whole transmission.

2003 darango has been taken to jim's Dodge to have a problem fixed when you drive. They tell us that there is nothing wrong with it. While you drive the darango if you hit a dump it jumps to one side or the other it does not stay center. The transmission feels like it slips, or when it is started it like the vehicle just does not want to go. Jim'[S Dodge has told us that there is nothing wrong with the vehicle, but that seems to all we have had with this vehicle. One more thing jim's Dodge is not a very clean place to take your vehicle to have it worked on we have got the vehicle back with oil on the in side on the vehicle, on the paint, scratchs in the paint and on the bumper. The vehicle has come back with a very bad smell in it. It took us a long time to get the smell out. We called jim's Dodge and told them about the smell and they told us that there was nothing tha they could do about it. The date might not be exact be close.

Consumer complained about a ball joint problem. Consumer took the vehicle to an independent tire shop to get the tires balanced and aligned and it was determined that ball joints were defective. The vehicle could not be aligned due to the ball joints. The Dodge dealer denied that there was a problem with the ball joints. Finally the dealer found play on one side and wanted to replace both upper ball joints. (the dealer rep stated that they were trained to check them a certain way and they would not have found play the way that they were checking them) the transmission would intermittently not upshift, however the dealer was unable to duplicate.
