Ref my 2005 Dodge Durango. The fuel tank filler tube inlet check valve will not fully close at the end of refueling. This allows fuel to escape from the vehicle through the filler neck at the end of refueling. Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire.

There is no particular event leading up to the following failure--it happened and then never stopped happening. Every time my 2005 Dodge Durango is refueled, the gasoline backwashes out of the filler tube. A significant amount of fuel gushes out of the filler tube requiring that I Dodge the fountain of fuel. This is a serious safety issue. My research revealed that a recall had been placed on this model for the same symptoms, but Dodge claims that my VIN isn't wasn't included in the recall. They suggested I take it to a local dealer for a diagnostic, which cost $70. The diagnosis is that the charcoal evap canister is filled with "liquid" caused by overfilling the tank and Dodge refuses to cover the repair. I contend that the evap issue is caused by the very problem of the fuel backwash. My visit to dodgeforum.com revealed that the fuel overflow is a common problem. Given the existing recall, it's obvious this is a safety problem that Dodge should be required to correct.

I have a 2005 Dodge Durango VIN#[xxx] built 09/04 that when I fill up the gas tank gasoline spits back before the pump shuts off. There is a Chrysler recall (E01 and H45) and my vehicle was manufactured during the recall dates. Chrysler continues to deny that the vehicle is not part of the recall but has offered a "good will replacement" which costs me $100 out of my pocket. My Chrysler case/reference # is [xxx]. the local dealer verified that the defect with the tank was the same as the recall. The NHTSA action # is RQ08005. There is a high potential of fire, property damage, and death or injury to who ever is near the vehicle while fueling. When filling the gas tank on my 2005 Dodge Durango. The gas does not automatically shut off causing an overflow every time. This is the exact thing that is described in a recall for '05 Durangos however mine does not have a qualifying VIN #. my vehicle has 44,000 miles on it. I contacted Chrysler, due to not being covered under warranty or the recall they said it was my financial responsibility to get the problem diagnosed and repaired by the dealership. Chrysler stated only after that was done they would look into if further but could not assure me they would cover any of the repair bill. I have not had this done as I cannot afford the up front expense. For the meanwhile I do not fill my tank all the way.

When putting gas into the tank of my vehicle, it spits gas back out. At the same time, we are getting surges in the speed of the engine, seems to be more frequently when speeding up from low RPM. The internet is full of instances of this same problem, but my dealer says no recall pertaining to this matter. They are replacing the gas tank at no charge, but say that I must pay for a diagnosis and a replacement sensor for the surging. 2005 Dodge Durango, every time I fuel up the tank to full fuel sprays back at me, this is a serious fire hazard when fueling. I contacted Chrysler and they advised that my particular Durango was not part of the recall. The vehicle has only 32,000 miles on it and is used to mainly Transport my twins. I know that Dodge had a recall on certain Durangos however are not willing to take a look at mine and it is doing the same thing the recalled Durangos are doing. I feel Dodge has a much larger problem or defect with the gas tanks on all Durangos in this year range. Fuel spurts out of the gas tank filler opening when filling the gas tank. About 1-2 cups of gas comes back out after the filler nozzle shuts off automatically. It happens approximately 2 out of 3 times filling the tank. When the fuel comes out of the filler neck it has gotten onto me and my clothes and of course it ends up on the ground at the filling station. I took it to the dealer to investigate the problem, they confirmed there is excessive pressure when filling the tank. The solution they proposed is to replace the gas tank and filler. I have not had this repair completed yet.

The dealer is going to diagnose it and if they suggest replacing the fuel tank then I will have to pay a $100 deductible since I have an extended warranty. Chrysler customer service stated my VIN was not in the recall and regardless of the fact that it is the same issue they recalled 18,000 2005 Durango's for they said it should be done at my expense. This issue occurs at any gas station I go to any time I try to fill the tank. We have had it at the dealer in the past for this issue when it occurred intermittently and nothing was done at that time as it did not occur with the dealer.

When filling tank with fuel, the pump will click off when "full". then approximately 0.5 sec after pump kick off fuel will flow out from around pump nozzle and overflow hole in the pump handle boot. When it first occurred it was very little fuel. Now it will spill out approximately 2 cups of fuel.

When filling the gas tank, the pump handle will stop, then the tank fills and about 1 or 2 cups of gasoline blows out of the tank through the filler neck onto me, the side of the vehicle and the ground. Your website shows a recall for this, however Dodge and the dealerships say it is not for my vehicle. I have not had it repaired yet due to the cost. I have been covered in gasoline when this happens. This recall needs to be expanded to my vehicle as well. The gas tank recalls are exactly what is going on w/ my vehicle. I have been told by several mechanics that this is an issue. In addition to safety a fuel spill is not legal and must be cleaned.
