Durango SXT 3.5L V6 Pentastart

The Good Old Pentastar tick. Vehicle maintenance has been impeccable. Started vehicle and heard ticking noise. Scheduled an appointment for shop, would not start, got vehicle towed then to be told I needed major engine repair $3500 worth. Wife has a 2020 version, hers started ticking towed to Toyota dealer got rid of the Dodge problem (15k miles). Got my 2013 Durango fixed going to sell it. Damn shame they were pretty reliable vehicles but I now see the Pentastar engines are a very expensive problem and Dodge knew about the issue since 2013 !!!! Soo much for Dodge products. I'm done with em !! Beware Challenger, Charger and RAM truck owners the "Tick" awaits you .

lifter seized and timing components failed

While on a trip with my family, the vehicle started to lose power and then check engine lights started to come on. It was showing that we had a bad battery and a misfire. I nursed the car to the nearest auto parts store and replace the battery and the coil pack for the cylinder of the misfire. Drove it home gently another 100+ miles. Brought it to the shop and was told the lifter had seized and destroyed the cam. This also bent pushrods, and valves and damages springs. We ended up paying 7500 for a new cam, lifters, pushrods, valves, springs, heads to be remachined and the labor.

This vehicle was meticulously maintained by the dealership at every maintenance interval, and has barely gone past the drivetrain warranty. I was told by the shop that this is a common issue with these engines and they see this all the time.

I am concerned now, as I also own a 2017 Dodge Charger Daytona 392 and it is ticking on cold start loudly and quiets down some. The dealer told me they would tear into the motor to check it, but if they did not find anything, I would be responsible for the costs. This car barely has 45k miles and is not abused and meticulously maintained as well.
