problem #2

Jan 152020

Durango SXT 3.6L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 40,000 miles

Engine suddenly stops. This problem began sometime in January 2020. When driving down the road the engine will suddenly stop. Power steering shuts down and have to pull the car over to the side of the road. I put the car in Park, turn the key fob to off, then try and restart the engine. It restarts and I pull back on to the road. This has happened 3 to 4 times a month since January 2020. It is now February 2021.

I thought that this was related to the recall on the fuel pump relay but that was corrected over 4 years ago on that recall. At that time the dealer installed the fuel pump relay and wiring harness which was to bypass and replace the original fuel pump relay.

For all of 2020 the car's engine continued to just suddenly stop as if the ignition had been turned off. But, the radio, turn signal, hazard lights, air conditioner (fan) all continued to work. I have never checked to see if the headlights were still working. It seemed to be just the engine. The power steering has an electric power steering pump but evidently that also lost electrical power because the power steering goes out when the engine dies.

In December 2020, I received another recall notice. This was a recall on the first fuel pump relay recall. Evidently that add on was now defective. They now had another replacement fuel pump relay for the one that was already installed on the car. I called the dealer to have this rectified and they said that they were out of that part to try again later. After a couple of weeks I decided to take the car to the dealer to have complete diagnostic done on the car. I described the engine stalling problem to the service dept. representative. He said that they would also drive the car to see if they could experience the engine stalling problem. Their diagnostic found no faults. They drove the car for 40 to 60 miles and it did not stop on them. They had the car for three days. They essentially said that there was nothing they could do without knowing what the exact problem is. They said that they could start replacing components one at a time and they also said that would "get very expensive". (How could they tell that they fixed the problem if they could not tell the parts were bad in the first place.) They did replace the fuel pump relay fix with the new fix under the most recent recall. They charged nothing for the diagnostic and the driving of the car and sent me on my way. They told me that when the car stops again to not start it and to have the car towed into their service dept. and MAYBE they could find the problem then.

I see on line that this is a very common problem with 2013 Dodge Durangos (and other Dodge cars). Surely Dodge/Chrysler is aware of this as there are just too many people (on-line) having this same EXACT problem.

The car is a 2013 Dodge Durango V6 with only 45,000 miles. So far it is a great car except for this engine stalling problem. We have not driven the car much since we got it back from the dealer service dept.

This is our only car. So, now what??

Durango Citadel 5.7L V8

  • Automatic transmission

Engine stalled while the wife was driving with the kids. Took it to the dealership and they don't have the replacement part. The dealership claim that the part still under manufacturing and they don't know when it will be available.
