I took a short trip to a property, When I returned to vehicle after 30 minutes the engine sound seem as if it was missing and there was excessive engine noise. Vehicle hesitated when backing up and cab noise was greater.
Took the vehicle out on a road test. Excessive noise when reaching the 4000 rpm with noticeable change of tone of engine sound. I first thought the muffler system may have come loose. I whipped into the local garage and asked to have the vehicle lifted. No loose parts found but I'm assuming possible gasket leak.
Took another road test when it was easily apparent that at the 4000 rpm level, there was a growl in the engine that was something I had not heard before. Did a couple acceleration tests, 0 to 60. At the third test it quit. Unclear what the problem is. Could be an exhaust gasket that when heated was able to seat itself in place. Vehicle returned to normal acceleration sound. It was if a switch had been flipped.
