Cruise control failed to cancel with cancel feature and braking at highway speeds. Could have resulted in crash and possible fatalities.
- Larry N., Havre, MT, US
On two separate occasions I was traveling at highway speed, 65 mph, in cruise control, and applied my brakes to exit on an approaching exit ramp. The cruise control did not disengage so as I approached the exit ramp I almost wrecked due to excessive speed. I slammed on my brakes to no avail. Missing the exit ramp and continuing to slam on the brakes, the cruise control eventually released. A red flashing brake warning light appeared on my dash. The owners manual indicated a problem in the electronic communication of the van and said it would correct itself within 1-2 minutes. After 1 minute the warning light went out and all appeared normal. Everything worked out OK until it happened again 2-3 days later. This is an accident waiting to happen and could cause a wreck easily. It felt like the accelerator was stuck and the brakes did not work. The brakes did work but were not able to overcome the cruise control which was stuck at 65 mph.

Driving at highway speeds, upon approaching a slower vehicle, I attempted to cancel cruise control. It did NOT cancel. I attempted to cancel cruise control by applying brakes and that did not work either. My car continued to accelerate.
