If the brakes were redesigned in 2009, please fire the engineers who did it right away. They are morons.
My 1996 grand Caravan with 265.000 KM has had four brake jobs so far and running smooth. Please
rehire those guys. I wonder until when Chrysler is going to play with their customers patience. Do not
cry wolf when the next crisis arrives. You are asking for trouble when disrespecting your customers.

Not impressed that they were worn out so quickly. They were squealing like crazy. Made it annoying to drive. I was told by dealer they needed replaced just before they made all the noise. I did them myself in my driveway without troubles. The tool for the rear brakes was $25 at Princess Auto. Managed to get the rear rotors and Pads in higher quality. Knew someone who could get me them. So didn't have to pay mark up.

What a bunch of crap. I agree about the brakes. I could not take the squealing anymore so I just made an appointment and I am happy that I found this site before I gave them millions again. My experience on buying a new vehicle can go right out the window!

I had new cars before never had to replace brakes till55to60000 miles what the hell is going on

Rear brake pad replacement at 17,000 miles is unacceptable. The dealer claims the warranty does not cover brake pads so I have to pay. But the brake pads are just the symptom, the problem is a poorly designed brake system that sticks and applies the brakes when they are not needed. I don't want to pay to treat the symptom, I want a real solution to the problem!
Anyone else have this problem? Was there a permanent solution to these terrible brakes?

Purchased the van in October 2011,with3kl on speedo. Well in Florida March 2012 the brakes started making a lot of noise. van had 26809KL om it. Went to dealer in Orlando to check out problem assuming it was under warranty only to find out that the warranty on the rear brakes is 20,000KL. Cost of repair,$435.90. they had to replace right rear rotor and both sets of pads. After inquiring why the brakes had failed so fast and bad I was informed by the service rep. that it was because I lived in Canada and the the driving condition are worse up there. Go figure. We are at the same latitude as North and South Dakota. On the way back from a resent trip to Virgina Beach on October 2012, Guess what brakes again. this time fronts with only 454205KL. Cost $208.15. I should have kept my 2002 Intrepid 275000KL with only two brake jobs.

I would like to say up front we like our Grand Caravan, for the price its decent. What I did to fix the premature brake failure was to make sure the brake pads have enough clearance in the caliper by lightly grinding the ends. Then I noticed the gasket/bladder on the inside of the brake fluid reservoir has two raised lip on the outer part. These two lips I believe are blocking the vent access for the underside of the bladder causing pressure buildup in the reservoir and then causing the brakes to drag...and warping of the rotors. I made the groove bigger with a drill bit in the plastic cap to allow air to escape from behind the bladder. Worked for me so far.

A 2010 Grand Caravan requiring a complete Brake rebuild is just simply terrible engineering. First noticed through extreme juddering when the brakes were warm (after a town drive or in hot weather). When braking the car would judder violently until a slower speed was reached. The discs all round required replacing along with calipers at the back. This is simply not acceptable for a car only 2 years old. I am a professional engineer and am stunned with this level of poor quality engineering and choice of materials for the most important part of a family car. An extended warranty does not cover it - this should be a total recall for all Grand Caravans to have the brakes fully re-built to expected quality levels. I will not buy a Dodge (of any model) again due to the lack of care shown to the design of these brakes. The sooner I move this car on and buy something with more life built in the better. :(

Bought this car November 2010, 6-month later only 21,000 Km They back left brake was burning and smoking. I took it into the dealership and they were not going to cover it under warranty but after a small argument with the mechanic at the dealership they covered it under warranty. My main point was the car was brand new and only 6-months old.
The brakes were heating up ever since I drove the vehicle off the lot. The excuse was that the brake were not make for this country and that they would get hot but wouldn't burn.
Just today we took it in to get a oil change + full check-up(which I had to pay for even though if i don't it void my extended warranty - $90) and told me that all the brakes had to be replaced(front and back) and was going to cost me $1000 to get that done.
They have since fixed this on the 2011 models of this vehicle. My question is why the hell can't they completely fix 2010 Grand Caravans with this problem since its solved on the 2011? Pretty much same vehicle.
And the fact that Dodge hasn't issued a recall is just bull sh*t. I think we need to raise cain about this and get the issue resolved the right way.

I bought this van brand new and never dreamed that when I could smell the brakes burning while driving and the van only having 23000 km would I be responsible for the repair. Granted I didn't have time to bring it in and it was just under 30000 by the time I did. They told me that it wasn't covered under warranty. I told him that the brakes were sticking and that it had nothing to do with the driver braking...still had to shell out 700 to get them fixed.
My parents bought the exact same van and they had theirs go at the 19000 km mark. The dealer covered them cuz they were under the particular kms. They drove for another 25000 and now they are gone again.
What a bunch of junk. The service at the dealership was appalling and as another person noted. You buy a new vehicle so you can keep it for a while without repair. Dodge you have now lost more than just one customer let me tell ya, cuz I'm going to be mentioning this to everyone.

I have had my 2010 Caravan for two years/30000km. After a 2 hour road trip on a hot day, it began to squeak as I pulled into my driveway. It was making a high pitched whine/squeak that sounded like squeaky brakes. However, I could only hear it when the brakes were NOT applied. The next day the sound only came back once the car was driven 10km.
I decided to take the van into the dealership since I believed my warranty would take care of me. They set me straight and told me that everything except brakes is covered by warranty. After a road test, they called me to recommend a brake service and advised that the tech believed that he could hear/feel my rear rotors were warped and should be replaced. I says, "Pardon?" New rotors at 30000km? I told them to do the "brake service" which boiled down to cleaning, lubing and rebuilding the brakes; I didn't have the appetite for a full brake job.
Problem fixed.
I cannot believe the amount of people that have had Caravan brake issues. It is scary to hear about people getting new brakes & rotors twice in 3 years. I fully expect to get a full brake job in the next year. My 2004 Jeep brakes have lasted 8 years and 100000km without any problem and I expected the same. If I had known about the wimpy brakes I would have bought a different vehicle.
This entire vehicle feels wimpy and cheap. It's underpowered and the body feels like plastic covered in tinfoil; sometimes it feels like I'll dent a fender when I'm washing it. The price was cheap and as it turns out, you get what you pay for. Even with the new drive train, I doubt I'll buy another one when the time comes.

2nd car with the same issue. You would think after a couple years they'd get it right. Last time this happened I dealt with a great guy who ended up refunding everything I paid. He told me to call him again if I ever had a problem unfortunately the DUMBO I dealt with doesn't know who he is. She told me basically too bad, that I had to pay the deductible. I have leased Dodge/Chrysler for the last 12 years(I only put about 7k miles a year on my cars) or so and because of this woman's attitude and the van having the same problems it will be my last. There's also an issue with the wheel bearings(another extended warranty). BEWARE. I'm sure they don't care about 1 person, however I also have 5 immediate family members that also own Dodges along with the people I've referred to the dealership.

30K and I have to do a complete rear brake job is unheard of on a vehicle that is less than 2 years old. The dealer told me their 'finicky' why is a vehicle that has finicky brakes even on the road? That sounds like a major road hazard and should be corrected with quality parts right away and not OEM garbage.
I have a 2002 Grand Carvan with 220k on it - I've only needed to do the rear brakes once
I had a 1998 Chevy Cavalier with 240k on it- I only needed to do the rear brakes twice.
I did the recall brakes for the front as needed but there is no way the rears should be going before the fronts..I'm livid right now...They're also telling me it's going to cost $500 to repair..I paid $30k for the vehicle and I'm going to need to put more money out for it. I was expecting (outside normal wear) to get at least 3 years out of the van before needing to do any major expense!

Dealer just greased the rear brakes at 21K now at 34K the rotars are shot and the pads to paper thin . Dealer called and said no recall from Dodge so will have to pay 500 to have a rear brake job at 34K

Brakes calipers ,rotors and pads all had to be replaced at 18000 kilometers. When i asked the Sevice writer what the problem was he stated the new vans have the cheapest parts installed at the factory. They also state that you should have your brakes service at 18000 kilometers at a cost of 200.00 . The real problem is the calipers. They are either poorly designed or proposely designed to stick causing burning smells and ceasing of the brakes. I don't know why the Goverment lets them get away with ripping the public. This van are a rip off and apeace of crap. If you enjoy being at the dealership every month this is the van for you. I will never ever buy a stinknig dodge again.

Purchased last Chrysler product.
History of mini-vans in this family and problem started with new 2008 and transmissions problems. Was under lease so unloaded and purchased 2010 Grand Caravan, took the hit as we required reliability.
Brakes started to be a problem at 22,000km, brother and I replaced front pads and rotors, did not think twice about it at the time. At 36,000 km had front pads replaced by local and 12 year trusted mechanic. He made comment rear pads looked great but neither of us gave it another thought. We noted that braking again was a problem within 1,200 km of recent work. New pads tore the sh*t out of the rotors in front. We (mechanic and myself) did complete tear down. Discovered rear pads looks so great as they were seized and I had to use a sledge hammer to remove pads. New pads all the way around and new rotors on front. Went to cheaper pad up front (softer, more dust and wear and they are terribly noisy).
Just got letter from Chrysler Canada they have extended warranty on brakes if you have less than 40,000 km and have experienced any of these conditions.
Wife is pissed and she just purchased new BMW Mini-Countryman, we are done with Chryslers after over 25 years of faithful purchasing from them. I am stuck with the van until I am done fixing/paying for it and now I am not sure what I will do for myself next purchase cycle.
Damn shame.

Slight brake noise heard from brand new but when on a trip to Pennsylvania encountered a hilly region where brakes really started shuddering whole van shook going down hills. Upon returning home took van to dealer who said rotors were severely rusted and only needed refacing. Are the rotors going to rust again.
- Harry W., Thornhill, ON, Ontario, Canada
very surprised to go for a routine oil chnage, mentioning a squeaking noise from the wheels, and being told the brakes (back ) rotors were seized. This vehicle was only one and a half year old, driven normally in the city. I took a lot of convincing for the dealer to get this covered under warranty. It happened less than a year later, and this time the NON expired no warranty is not able to cover. Do I need to expect putting $500 every year to replace the breaks ! What about the safety of my family and kids. Dodge says we need to clean the breaks every year (never heard of that from Subaru or Toyota - my previous cars). That is what I just did and the story now is down to break cleaning at least every 8 months !!!! My story is now bye bye Dodge forever !!! You just lost my business and I will not put any good words about you, but will gladly teel the truth !
