Headrest deployed parked in the drive way for no reason. It is annoying and now inoperable and does not provide the protection it was designed for.

problem #1

Grand Caravan Crew V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 50,000 miles

This issue of the drivers side safety head rest deploying for no reason (Car was parked in driveway, I entered the vehicle, started the engine, heard a loud noise and discovered the noise was the head rest deploying). After looking in the owners manual on how to reset, I attempted to reset the head rest following the procedure with zero success (the head rest would not latch).

I had parked the vehicle after driving for 8 hours (500 mile trip) and after taking it through an automatic car wash. No, the vehicle had not been involved in an accident.

I will update the cause once the dealer has looked at it.

Update from Jun 20, 2017: UPDATE: Dealer replaced the head rest using extended warranty (thankfully, otherwise it would have been a $900 repair). I contacted Chrysler-Dodge and they investigated the issue. The manufacturer refused to provide financial aid in the repair. The manufacture (Chrysler) refused, even after multiple requests, to share their findings of the incident other then to say it was not a manufacturer error.

Gee, the headrest is to deploy in an accident to prevent/minimize injuries. Having it deploy without an accident certainly gives the impression that it was a manufacturer error, software error or computer glitch. Chrysler simply doesn't want to say it's any of those things. Luckily it didn't deploy while driving down the road - otherwise an accident would have probably occurred (as I instinctively ducked when it happened).

Chrysler got lucky this time (I guess I did too)
