I have a 1999 2.7L Dodge Intrepid that is currently being investigated for possible warranty denial on an engine failure. We had a sensor replaced in November 18 2003 along with an oil change and a transmission change. After this service through the Dodge dealership in our area we noted that the oil light was flickering whilst idling and when the engine was warm. We were assured that it was just a sensor issue and they promptly checked the oil level a month ago to assure us the oil was still in the engine. The engine began ticking at high speeds and had continued to get worse. The engine has a loud knocking noise that is predominent as soon as I turn on the engine. In order to not risk the safety of my two young children we had the vehicle towed to the dealership. They have now concluded that there was sludge in the engine and that an inspector will need to determine if the extended warranty or the basic warranty that is still affective will cover the costs. Upon reading sites on this vehicle it is almost predetermined that they will refuse to cover the cost under our warranty. What rights do we have if this happens" we still owe money on the vehicle and cannot afford the rental and the cost to repair the vehicle. And if Chrysler is aware of this issue surely this should have been a problem that the local dealership could have determined before our engine became damaged"

My 1999 Dodge Intrepid 2.7L blew an engine at normal expressway speeds on July 29, 2003, causing an immediate and extremely dangerous loss of power in mid-traffic. It also resulted in an enormous repair estimate of between $5,000 and $7,500. A design flaw in this particular engine causes an excess build-up of engine sludge, which results in premature engine failure at anywhere between 35,000 and 70,000 no matter how religiously you change the oil. I have since discovered an astounding number of complaints on the internet regarding this exact issue, and any call to any auto salvage yard in America will confirm what I'm saying. Everybody in the auto repair industry is aware of this problem. Chrysler has been made aware of the problem by thousands of complaints regarding this issue, but they have refused to do anything about it. No recall, no assistance with repair costs. Nothing.

I have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid. It has a 2.7 liter motor in it. The motor has failed. The warrenty is out, but from the feed back I have been getting for the last year. The 2.7 liter motors are no good. I'm looking at around $5000 to put another motor in it. This price is a quote I got from a shop in skiatook, ok I contacted crysler Dodge in 2003 after the motor failed. I was told I had no warrenty which I was aware of and that they had no plans of taking care of the faulty 2.7 liter motor. I filed a complaint at that time. I have filed other complaints to the federal trade commission, cosummer affairs, I spoke to the attorney generals office in Oklahoma city, ok they referred me to this site. The federal trade commission referred me to contact crysler Dodge again. On Feb,18,2004. I spoke to someone in customer service, she would not give me her name, she was very rude. She pulled up the VIN number of my car. Told me I had no warrenty, I told her I was aware of that. She ask me if I had recieved a recall notice on the front drivers seat. I told her yes but had been unable to take the car in because the motor was bad. I ask her if crysler Dodge planned on taking care of the problems with the faulty motors. She said to me very sharply "the company is not going to do anything with the motors. Your warrenty is out theres nothening that can be done." I ask her if they still made this motor, she put me on hold. She returned to the phone and said "yes they do" I ask her if crysler Dodge made the motor or if they had a outside company make the motor. Her reply to me was " I have help you enough and I'm not going to get you that information." I said well I would like that information and I did feel like she needed to get it for me I was a owner of a Dodge car. I then told her I would like a supervisor on the phone to speak with. She said she was done dealing with me and hung up on me.

1999 Dodge Intrepid with 2.7L Mitsubishi engine. Oil lamp began flickering at low idle. Dealer said the engine may be about to fail and repair would be $5000. This led me to www.airline-complaints.com, where, if you look up automobile complaints, then Chrysler, you will find pages and pages of notes regarding this vehicle and engine, describing sudden catastrophic failure without warning. If this should happen on the highway, the operator could lose control as the power assist is lost to both steering and brakes. While my engine has not failed yet, the warning sign is there, and I now consider it unreliable and of diminished value, as I cannot sell it with a clear conscience. I would like to see daimler Chrysler make good on premature engine failure.

2.7L engine started to make loud noise. Took engine apart and found that timing chain guides had disintegrated. Replaced guides, rod bearings and oil pump. Cleaned all sludge from engine. Check engine started to flash. Car lost power. Had car towed to dealership. They couldn't find anything wrong with the car. Car started up for them. Didn't find any codes in computer. Drove car for about 2 months before problems started again. Check engine light stayed on. Took to independent shop and got an asd relay problem and tcm relay problem. Replaced relays. Car ran fine for about 3 months. Problems started again. When this happened the first time the car had been driven about 70 miles. After the last time it was driven 20 miles. Towed to dealer. Stated that there is a timing problem and alot of sludge in the motor. Estimate of $1200 to try to find out what is wrong. Also had to replace A/C prior to all of these problems. I have had the car for 3.5 years and have not driven it for almost 2 of them. Sending in the payoff so I can get rid of the piece of junk. Have heard that the 2.7 is nothing but problems.
