Up to now the car had been running normal, routinely checked fluids with no leakage found. Trans working fine no slipping and then I went to park the car. It would not shift into park. I then shifted thru the gears with no problem. Finally after several attempts the car went park. The next morning the car would not shift out of park, I gave the shifter a good tug and SNAP. I then tore apart the console and discovered that the shift cable had detached from the shift lever arm, The arm was twisted and bent downward, which allowed the cable to simply slide off. I used a pair of channel locks to reshape the shifter arm. I moved the shifter back so I could reattach the cable....I started the car, so I know it was not a interlock cable problem. It still would not shift out of park...So as I sat scratching by ever balding head while the car idled in park for a good 10 minutes.
Then I sprayed wd-40 on EVERYTHING and Ta-Da. The car shifted into reverse .
Then neutral and then to drive...I could not shift to 3rd or 1st, I still have to readjust the cable for that to happen....I have been driving the car with this potential headache waiting to rear it's ugly head again..Can anybody tell me whats going on and why does the car shift only when the transmission is warm?

son of a bitch cars never break when its warm out it was getting hard 2 shift from park for about 3 weeks now and all of a sudden i could not even shift so here i am in tim hortons parking lot ripping my car apart so far i think it has 2 do with the linkage i have the console ripped out and the cable connection is all bent which caused it 2 come apart so had to get a flat bed truck 2 get home would not come out of park
