Okay, We just bought this 2000 dodge intrepid, the guy i bought it from said all it needed it was a crank shaft sensor. I replaced it and it still stalls out. I have read a bunch of these complaints and i feel terrible for buying this car. gonna try to sell this piece of junk! Don't know what I got myself into.

There are several other problems. I grew up loving Dodge, but this car has given me an experience that I will do all I can to avoid in the future.

The car the would stall while driving on the highway at a normal speed, 50 MPH or so and the RPM would drop to 0 - necessitating my coasting with my hazard lights and praying that no one saw my much reduced speed and ram the back of my car. It would not restart until it "rested" about 5-10 minutes.
To try and figure out what I should do, I called the Dodge site, reported it, they said there was no recall and to go to the nearest dealership for a diagnostic after recording my complaint using my VIN# and to call once it had been repaired letting them know. I went and did as they asked and so far so good...praying it worked really as the stalling was random times.
They replaced the crank shaft position sensor - if it did not solve the problem I will return here and let the world know...too many have suffered from this dangerous symptom without success and I felt hopeless until I got some sense of not being alone and seeing the one other solution (which happened to be what they told me too) which gave me some direction to go and hope. Thanks for this site.

My Dodge 2000 Intrepid stops in the middle of driving. It started out just stuttering while driving. Then it progress to just stoping in the middle of acceleration. I don't drive if for more than 30mins at a time so I can't tell you if would happen all the time. All I know is that it stops usally about 10mins of driving. This has happened two times to me and one time to my wife. It also seems to have a wave of driving experiences too. Sometimes it runs great, others it just feels like it dosn't want to go. I don't really care about the problem. I just want people to know about it. I need to get a new car any ways. the parts for the car is worth more than the car. I don't know how that makes since but it's true.
This is my first and last Dodge. I was looking to get a Dodge Charger, but whith this problem being a common one and no know fix issue by Dodge. I just don't trust them. I head that this problem has been happing to the this model since they first rolled of the lot in 2000, and thats why they discontinued the model in 2002.

I'm driving on the interstate and the car stalls! RPM's goes to 0! Engine shuts off! I can't increase speed and unfortunately in the middle lane. Good news! I'm alive to post this! I could have been killed! With speed rapidly decreasing, I managed to pull off to the emergency lane. After thanking God repeatedly, I managed to collect my nerves and call for roadside assistance. The car started, but I was too traumatized to continue driving. Diagnosis...mechanic can't find anything wrong. I'm back in the vehicle because of necessity, but I only drive on the surface roads in the far right lane...

i had try everything to fix this problem. i had put in about 2,000 dollars and then come to find out that on the dash board was a code and the code is 1391 so i had both the cam shaft position sensor and crank shaft position sensor changed and it worked great now.
so if there is anyone else that is having this problem, fix those first. it used to stall on me a lot and it loved to do it really bad in the heat. i would be driving on the freeway and the RPMs would go crazy so fix that. just try to save people lots of money.

This car is great when it runs. The problem is, it hardly ever does (run, that is). The car just started acting stoooopid. My wife and I were at a stop sign here in town, and as we were about to turn, she said to me, "Hey, is the car running?" I glanced at the RPM gauge and saw it was on 0. I tried to restart the car, but it wouldn't. We had to walk about four blocks to my wife's grandmother's house to get a ride home. I took it to a mechanic (it restarted after a three hour wait), who told me later that the computer didn't send any error codes. That means, in modern mechanic-ese, we can't do jack for you except replace a bunch of expensive parts that may or may not be the problem to begin with.
Luckily, we had a mechanic we've known forever, or that might have happened to us. As it was, we had to pay a small fee ($102.00) to be told that it wasn't going to be fixed easily and to have a new Oxygen sensor put on. Then the next day, Sunday, we went to church, and when we got out of Sunday School, the car would not crank again!
Embarrassed, we had to beg a ride home. Then, about two hours later, we went back and it cranked right up. We went to church again that night, only to have it again not crank when we got out of church. My brother and I were going to check the battery (which is also a pain in the royal patootie to get to), but before we did, I breathed a silent prayer and tried to crank it. It started right up again. But we went to McD's to get the kids something to eat, and as we pulled out into heavy traffic, it died again, this time putting my whole family in danger!!! I put a new Battery in the car right there in the parking lot of McD's (a HUGE PAIN, ESPECIALLY IN THE DARK). But much to my dismay, it did absolutely no good, as the car didn't start again. Finally, after my Mother-In-Law came to get my wife and kids to take them home, it started and I was able to get home.
I had removed the after-market stereo today (1-8-08) to see if maybe I had gotten it in wrong. Just as I removed the last of the wiring and sat the radio in the floorboard (unhooked TOTALLY), the car died again. I WAS SOOOO MAD! Now it is knocking just a little way down deep inside, it sounds like, and the radiator fans won't come on, even after reaching operating temperatures. The yellow check engine light has gone off, but I think it's just because I unhooked the old battery and put on the new one. If these were the only problems, I might not be SO worked up, but this is just a few of many.

This raggedy piece of junk car randomly shuts off if I'm going 20 miles per hour or 45 miles per hour. It normally starts back up within 3 minutes.. I don't have to stress how dangerous this is or how much trouble this is causing... i can't wait to get rid of this piece of crap.... And to DODGE....."What goes around comes around" you bunch of rip-offs... You deserve to lose every customer you have.

Car had been fine until 85,000 miles. Several electric window motors were replaced under warranty. Then the engine started chugging and the check engine light came on. Had it checked out and nothing definitive was found. It happened again and then would not start for a few days after I got it home. Had it towed from my house. My mechanic replaced the cam and crank sensors. Ran like a champ for week before it died in traffic while doing 45mph. It sat for 36 hours in a strange neighborhood. Went back and tried to start it before having it towed again. It started. No check engine light and it ran fine all the way to the shop. My guy checked it again and everything was "normal". Drove it for another few days before it shut off while driving again. Luckily it was me and not my daughter or wife driving the car and I was able to push it to safety. Just got a ride home from a friendly cop. If I can get it to run long enough to trade it in, it is gone tomorrow. Only blessing is that it is paid off.
Give me 1/2 of what is worth. I want it gone!

Like so many others - While driving engine shuts off. If I can safely get over and wait a minute or 3 it will start again. No codes in computer, Dealer says nothing is wrong but I fear I will die some day. $1000 so far in sensors, diags, and sh*t that didn't help. I shouldn't have to pay if they can't fix it... Christ at least give me the diag money back it didn't help. You people suck, yours cars suck, your support sucks, I'll buy Honda and Toyota from now own. American made don't' only means you're gonna get screwed these days. What a shame. Hope you all use your profits on medical bills!
- joebassano, Spotswood, NJ, US
Dealers all say "bring it it" then they can't find anything but charge me for diags. Someone WILL get killed if it is used. You never know when it will just stop. I can't sell it as is. I purchased it new for $20K, has 54K miles and I have to junk it? Come on Chrysler, you want Toyota and Honda to rule? Help fix this problem, give me something back, or you'll just keep losing ground.

My girl friends 2000 Dodge intrepid stalls while driving, all the time soon as you take your foot off the gas. I've changed cam, crank, throttle, map and fuel pump no check engine lights no error codes and still no change. This car as far I'm concern, is now too dangerous to be on the road and we thinking off getting rid of it ......Done spending money on a doomed car that is not fixable !!!!
