I bought my 2007 Dodge Magnum SXT on March 4th 2015 from a used car dealer with 104000 miles on car. About 3 months later my oil light illuminated and then turned off immediately ( flashed). I was due for my 3000 mile maintenance so I bought some oil and filter and checked the level. To my surprise there was no level indicated on the dipstick. The oil dipstick was completely dry not even a spec of oil on it. I couldn't believe the warning light did not come on ever before the level got that low.
I immediately started looking for a leak. Looked under car and all around engine compartment for some type of leak. My investigation produced no leaks. I then started the car and check the exhaust for scent of oil or smoke from tailpipe. There was no findings out of the normal. I talked with some mechanics at local dealership and they advised me to check the PCV valve. I went directly home and checked the PCV valve and there was no rattle in valve like there is supposed to be. I bought a new PCV valve and problem was solved. Or so I thought....
Fast forward to present time. I currently had 3200 miles on this oil change, checked the oil level on oil dipstick and to my surprise again the oil level was half way between oil fill mark and bottom of dipstick. I went ahead and did my maintenance and was 3.5 quarts low on this 3000 mile run. PCV valve is in working order. I have exhausted all my available troubleshooting options. The Magnum forum has a thread just for this and there is hundreds of people with same problem and recommend the "catch can method" which seems ludicious to me that this is the fix (catching the oil in a can and then redistributing it back into engine! There has to be something else to fix the disappearing act of the engine oil in the 3.5L V6 engines...
