For some time (about four years), I had the Neon and there were few simple problems. Tires gone bad, oil changes, one dead battery, and dull windshield wipers. These problems where no big deal and fixed after a couple of seconds.
Now, I have this problem where when I first start the car, I do not hear the "ding noises" it makes to indicate that the car is running fine. Another thing is that when I am at a stop light or sign and I am at a COMPLETE stop, that the car seems to roughly jumps and violently shakes when the gas pedal is pushed down. The weird thing is that after a couple of seconds, then car runs fine. It's like it has a REALLY REALLY bad rough start at first. This happens every single time I am at a stop light or stop sign.
Think of it as hitting the gas pedal so hard that the car peels out, but instead of creating that satisfaction of creating smoke before accelerating forward, your left with your car roughly jumping and literally shaking violently in order to accelerate.
I have checked the battery, tires, alternator, and actually took my car to a transmission shop (SAM'S Club) and a local mechanic (close friend that is a expert). The mechanic doesn't know what the problem is and SAM'S Club told me that the car seems fine (even though they lied right into my face). I wished they did a one mile test to see what the problem is instead driving around the store.
IF ANYONE HAS ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS CAR PLEASE NOTIFY ME IMMEDIATELY!!! I HAVE LITERALLY GIVEN UP ON THE CAR AND REQUIRE PROFESSIONAL HELP FROM ANYONE!!!! I SERIOUSLY DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS ANY MORE (right now i just guess it is the engine)!!!!

Transmission hiccups on this car, especially if the car's been driven a little agressively. If you accelerate steadily and gently, the occasional jerks seem less noticeable. If the car starts to stall in reverse in summer, shut off A/C while backing up and give it a little steady gas. At least, that's worked w/ my car. Have had car for 10 years -- since new in May 2000 -- and still runs OK as of July 2010. Yes, tranny hiccups; but the hiccups are mostly preventable if you adapt to the car and if the car has not been mistreated in the past. Just lots of little annoyances for hubby and me, but nothing we can't live w/ so far.
