My vehicle is equipped with a manual transmission and intermittently will not go into 3rd. Gear. Pulling out in traffic becomes quite an adventure and when the problem occurs, I cannot do anything but try to go back into second or into fourth. Snow conditions makes this very unsafe to try to control vehicle. I use the car for work as a courier. Battling this problem since it was new on 10/18/05. Trans was repaired once. Trans acted the same way within a few thousand miles. I contacted Chrysler and got a case going with customer assistance which was useless. They told me to take the car back to the dealer who did verify the problem, but said there isn't a fix for it!

2005 Dodge Neon SXT. Car will roll on a driveway if placed on 4th gear. I parked my car on my mom's driveway which is elevated at an angle. I thought I had placed the gear in reverse. Instead, I inadvertently placed it on fourth gear which is right next to reverse. When my kids were getting in the car, the car started to roll backwards. Luckily, nobody was injured. It was possible that someone could have gotten hurt if they were behind the car. The parking brake could not hold the weight of that car. The manufacturer did specify to put the car in reverse when parking the car. However, they should have emphasized on the owner's manual that putting the car in fourth gear will not hold the car in gear if parked on an incline. I hope that the manufacturer will advise other owners about this before someone gets injured or die.

: the contact stated at various speeds, the vehicle must be shifted from second to third gear multiple times for the transmission to shift. The dealership was unable to duplicate the problem.

Neon 4-cyl

  • Manual transmission
  • 800 miles
I have a 2005 Dodge Neon srt-4. I purchased the car last may brand new with 2 miles on the odometer. Since about 800 miles I have been having a problem with the 3rd gear during both up shifting and down shifting. During the up shift, at times it will just lock out of gear, and I will have to release the clutch, rev the engine and then press the clutch again to get the gear to engage. During the down shift, about 1 out of 10 times it will either just pop back out of gear, it will seem to only partly engage, then grind and pop out, or just grind and not engage at all. I took it into the dealership where I purchased it, along with another local Dodge dealership to ask about it, and at both places I was told that it is a common problem, but unless I could show them what was happening, while it was happening, there was nothing they could do about it.
