My car will not lock. About a year ago the "lock-unlock key" stopped working and no one could figure out what was wrong with it. Since then I've had to manually use the key to unlock the driver door and then manually use the door lock/unlock button for the rest of the doors. Last month (March 2015), the locks completely stopped working. After 2 days the unlock button on both the driver and passenger sides starting working, but the lock button is completely non-functional. I have to manually lock every door to keep my car somewhat secure, however my trunk is now stuck unlocked with no way to lock it. I have brought my car to 3 mechanics and none of them can figure out the problem. After doing some research it seems many people are having this same problem.

I was in the process of existing my vehicle, when I pulled to open the door, the latch just broke off. The latch seems like it's made of plastic. Now, I would need to open the door from the outside. I'm concerned to the repercussion if I happen to get into an accident. I will not be able to open the door in case of an emergency. I contacted [xxx] and spoke with a rep name[xxx]. he said that the company is unwilling to fix the problem, information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

2 interior door handles have broken with normal use. Been told that the only way to fix is to purchase the entire door panel for approx. $350.

With normal use the inside door handle snapped in two. In order to get out of the drivers door, with the key still in the ignition you must hit the unlock button, roll down the window, open the door from the outside, roll the window back up and then turn off the car. My door handle is less than 3 years old but I have more than the allotted miles due to my long commute to work. I was told it cost $75 for the part and two hours of labor at $115 for a estimated total of $300 to replace the interior door handle. I feel the part is poorly made for its use and should have never snapped off. I also feel this is a safety issue as the driver cannot make a quick escape out of the car when this part unexpectedly snaps. I was also surprised when contacting the Dodge dealership that they had the part in stock, which also tells me they must have had to replace several to keep that particular part in stock.

Our 2007 Dodge Nitro has had both inside front door handles break this summer, the right side in June and the left drivers side in August. The break is in the same place on both and resulted in the passenger and then the driver unable to exit the vehicle except thru the back seat doors or by opening the front doors by lowering the window and reaching out to the outside handle. This is a very bad safety concern for me for the reason that our 16 year old daughter could not get out of our vehicle as a new driver. I have replaced both at a cost of over $100. The parts person that I worked with to order the part said the past time he has ordered these for others and keeps them in stock. I think we have a grave issue with safety and being able to exit the vehicle, especially if it was involved in a accident or fire.

The contact owns a 2007 Dodge Nitro. The contact stated that the key that was used to open and close the doors was lost. A locksmith was notified and was unable to change the door locks due to a plastic cover over the cylinder. The plastic covering that could not be removed was a manufacturers design. The authorized dealer stated that the entire door connection required replacement before the cylinder lock could be replaced. The contact was displeased to know the lengthy process and time frame involved with the service repair; however, there was a key for the ignition and a remote for the opening and closing of the vehicle doors. The failure and current mileages were 15,000.
