Ram 2500 Laramie SLT Plus 5.9L Diesel

  • Automatic transmission
  • 120,000 miles

Paint started to fade in 2009 and just keeps getting worse. Paint on roof and hood is now cracking and shrinking showing primer and some bare metal in places. I had a 1987 Dodge Ram 150 in red and paint just faded away to white. Liked my Dodge enough to buy a new one, but very disappointed in Dodge for now improving the paint quality. Should have been a recall to address this problem! shame on Dodge!

When I bought the truck new, after about 6 months I noticed a problem with the paint. It looked like you can see the undercoat and that they did not put enough blue paint on the truck, as well as it chipped really easy down to the the primer. I took it to Dodge, and to make a long story short, fought with them for almost 3 years where finally was about to take them to court and then they acknowledged the paint was a problem and agreed to repaint the truck, this was in June 2005.

Now after 8 years the clear coat failed and the paint is peeling. I can only assume that the company that painted it for Dodge did a cheap paint job. I know they didn't sand down to the primer and think they just laid one coat of blue and then the clear coat. Dodge has washed their hands of it and they say I have to fight it out with the paint shop that painted it. They have a life time guarantee but not against paint failure. Figures...

Funny, the same year I bought the Dodge I bought a dark blue VW Jetta wagon TDI and the paint is original and still looks great other than some rock chips. Parked in front of the same house and washed and waxed at the same brush free car wash. Yes, they had wax and I had both vehicles done 2 times per year. This is my 3rd Dodge and now my last. I think I'll buy one of the new China Copies next year. I think they are better built and would last longer for 1/2 the price. Also note that all the frame, springs etc are rusted and tried fighting Dodge as well after the first year I bought it. They just kept saying they do not cover service rust. You should, what the surface has turned into now.

There are at least 30 or 40 Dodge trucks in my area alone that have the same paint problem. If Dodge is so great and lasts so long why don't they fix this problem. Seeing all these trucks with bad paint is not positive advertising for Dodge. Does anyone know of a class action lawsuit for the paint problems on the Dodge Ram trucks?

My last 6 new cars have all been dodges and I have had terrible paint programs on 4 of them. This will probably be my last problem with a dodge.
