Ram 2500 4WD 6-cyl Diesel

I have a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 with the cummins and automatic transmission. The automatic selection indicator does not show the vehicle in park at least once a day when I drive it. I now this is a problem and have had recall #05V-462 DCC #E17 done. This is a patch and does not address the problem of why my truck does not go into park. One of these days my 7000 pound truck is going to roll backwards and damage, injure or kill someone.

Re: DC E17 "safety recall to install out-of-park alarm system" this recall is an unacceptable resolution. It does not provide a fix to the lack of 2003-2005 Dodge Ram trucks to properly engage automatic transmission gear selections. The recall is being refused by myself and many others in the rv and towing community. Activating an alarm if the vehicle is not fully in park and the engine running is going to do little to prevent accidents and/or personal injury. It is an annoying and obtrusive "feature" that drivers are over-riding anyway using faux seat-belt latches and jumper wires. The NHTSA should endeavor DC to fix the shifter engagement problem, not provide a band-aid to a poorly designed shifter mechanism.

The truck incorrectly reads gear indication while not in gear and is extremely hard to change gears in a timely and safe fashion.. one time, after exiting the truck it proceeded to engage in reverse and crashed into a tree. A person assisting had considerable trouble getting the truck to find its gears. It will rev in neutral while clearly indicating drive. I have already contacted Dodge. They sent and investigator who did not examine the fault and disregarded the claim. This is a potentially dangerous engineering fault!

There is a problem with the indicator light on the dash and a problem with the gear shifter. The consumer states that when putting the vehicle into gear the indicator light does not always show the correct gear. Before the consumer put the vehicle into park with the motor running, and when the consumer exited the vehicle, it did not move at first, then it rolled backward. This caused property damage. This incident occurred on 8-26-05, and similar incidents happened at least five times. When the consumer took the vehicle to the dealership they could not find the cause of the problem.

3 times this has occurred. After putting my Dodge Ram 2500 diesel into park, leaving the motor running and stepping out of the truck, the transmission has jumped out of park and into reverse. The first time it ran over a gate and crushed the driver door. Dodge paid the repair bill. The second time I was testing the vehicle to see if it would do it again. It did. The third time my wife was assisting me at my farm and stepped out of the truck after putting it in park. We looked up and the truck was traveling backward at a fairly fast pace. I was able to get the door open and put in park, however, it was a very close call. We could have both been run over in addition to the pens that were just a few feet away.

I put my truck into park to run in and pick up my dry-cleaning ( was inside maybe 60 seconds) came out to find my truck gone and after looking I find it across the parking lot. It had jumped the curb went through their landscaping and hit a tree damaging the rear bumper, tailgate, bed side and dually fender. After going back in the cleaners the lady that works there informed me that her new Dodge truck has done that to her before. This is the 3rd time this truck has done this to me and it is not a year old. The first time I figured it was my fault but I started paying closer attention, the 2nd time it was in park with the "P" lit up and got about 2 stepes from the truck when it started going backwards but caught it before anything happened and now this. I have contacted Dodge and they are supposed to send someone out to look at my truck"?" we'll see!!!

I pulled up to a local gas station and placed the shift lever in the park position as indicated by the shift indicator leaving the vehicle running as I went in to get an air chuck. I was inside maybe a minute and came out to find my truck had gone into reverse and backed out into a busy street and crashed into a tree a little ways down. The vehicle was still running and the indicator still read park but the truck was clearly in reverse. The rear bumper was pushed in as well as the right rear fender and back edge of the truck box.
