problem #1

Dec 262008

Ram 3500 Laramie 5.9L Cummins Diesel

  • Manual transmission
  • 92,935 miles

I bought this truck with 92,935 miles on it in Texas in Dec 2008 and planned to drive it back to Pa. I stopped late into the night and stayed in a motel--when I got up the next morning the sides of the truck and underneath were covered in oil--dripping from everywhere. I called the dealer I bought it from and told him I wanted to return it. They told me to just take it to a dealer closer to my home as the vehicle had a 100 K warranty on it. I drove the vehicle into a Hagerstown Md Dodge dealership. They said it needed a crankcase breather and fixed it under warranty. Since then it seemed like it always had oil spots and smudge on the truck and camper when used.

Last year I replaced the crankcase breather again due to oil on the truck but not like the first time coming up from Texas. This year the truck was taken to a non-dealer diesel mechanic with only 123,000 + miles on it. The shop owner, a certified ASE tech, said that the truck was blowing compression back into the oil pan from Number 1, 5 and 6 cylinders. I told him I had taken it to the dealer under warranty but they only put a crankcase breather on it and claimed it to be fixed, He said that was only a band aid and that as soon as it loaded up with oil then it would blow oil out again--exactly what had been happening. He said the engine needed replaced.

I contacted Cummins who said they had nothing in it cuz Dodge bought the Engines from them with no warranty. I contacted Dodge customer service and told them the story and they refused to offer any assistance because it was out beyond warranty. I told them I felt that it had been brought in before the warranty expired and that it had been misdiagnosed. I told them I had the paperwork from when and where I had taken it but they still refused any assistance. I am now putting in a rebuilt engine and hoping for the best--I am 63 and thought this would be the last truck I would buy since I only put about 5k on it a year--won't buy another Dodge I can promise no matter what happens to this one.
